Racing pattern

Racing pattern

This refers to the style that a horse likes to run in.

Some horses are leaders, so their racing pattern sees them running along at or near the head of the race.

Other horses are back-markers, meaning that they like to sit back in the run and come home strong down the outside.

In its most general sense, the racing pattern just means how the horse usually runs its race.

"A swooper has won every race on the card! You've got to back number 10 in the last. His racing pattern suits the track bias."
