Ugly speed map

Ugly speed map

This is when the speed map shows that most horses in the race run with a similar racing pattern.

There are two main cases when you would hear this phrase.

Either the speed map shows that all/most of the horses are front runners, meaning that the race will be run at a breakneck speed as horses vie for the lead, and consequently tire each other out.

Or the opposite, when all/most of the horses are back markers.

With no front runners there will be no speed in the race, which doesn't favour the running style of horses that like to get back and conserve their energy for a sharp dash at the line.
