A black book is somewhere where you record the names of the horses you want to keep.
You usually "black book" a horse when it has a good run, but for whatever reason, doesn't win the race.
Mate 1: "What made you back that horse? He's 30/1!"
Mate 2: "He's in my black book. I must've liked something about him last start."
