Carrying feathers

Carrying feathers

The opposite of carrying an elephant is carrying feathers.

It is when a horse doesn't have to carry much weight in the run, either because it's a young horse in a WFA race, or because it gets significant weight relief under handicap conditions.

It's a term which is always used in a positive light i.e. if a horse is said to be carrying feathers, it means they will have to do less work than the other horses and therefore have a better chance of winning under the weight conditions.

"My racing tip of the day won her last two and is carrying feathers with just 49kg on her back. Why wouldn't you jump on?"
