Best Plays for Turnbull Stakes Day
Flemington plays host to another Group One day of racing, with the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m to be run and won.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with fine weather on the cards, punters can expect a perfect racing surface.
The rail is out 7m for the entire circuit and at this set-up, I expect the track to play fairly.
Flemington Race 1 Tip #1 General Beau $2.60
It's very hard to tip against this colt, who is clearly above average.
One major factor going for him is the fact he has the benefit of race experience, following a seriously impressive debut win over 900m down the straight here.
Jumping from the outside alley in that clash, he led up the field and when given some reign at the 300m mark he quickly put a space on his opposition.
Making that performance all the more impressive, he was under hands and heels throughout and was never shown the whip.
Perfectly drawn in the middle for this race, he will be able to settle up on-speed on whatever side of the track is playing the best.
Although some of the debutants have had impressive jump-outs, the race experience and above average ability of this colt should see him account for this field.
Flemington Race 4 Tip #4 Tofane $3.00
I'm keen to be with Tofane here in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes, as he comes out of the same form-line as a number of his key rivals.
Last start fresh he finished third behind Zoutori in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis at this track and distance, but was only beaten 0.3 lengths in what was a very close go to the line.
He comes here now second-up, where he is proven to run much better (3:2-0-0).
He also gets in extremely well at the weights, as he holds the same 58kg that he ran with last start. Zoutori goes up 3kg to 59kg, whilst fourth place getter The Inevitable has to rise up 3.5kg.
Tofane strips much fitter now and should have no issue finding the back of a horse from barrier four. This will allow him to get a lovely cart down the straight, so that he can be presented at the right time.
With an Everest slot already sewn up via the Yu Long Investment slot, I'm tipping Tofane wants to come out here and make a statement.
Lay Of The Day - Race 7 #9 Verry Elleegant $4.00
The Winx Stakes champ comes down to Melbourne third-up for another crack at Group 1 glory in this ripping edition of the Turnbull Stakes.
Following the big first-up performance, she put in a very underwhelming effort last start in the George Main Stakes. After having a soft run on the fence, she wasn't able to pick up enough and finished 1.6 lengths fourth.
She was beaten by Kolding and Imaging in that clash, who would both be close to double figures here and I believe that performance showed that Verry Elleegant is suspect in big races on firm ground.
She is expected to strike a dry surface on Saturday, with the hot weather likely to remove any sting out of the track.
The last time Master Of Wine faced Verry Elleegant at this trip was in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. On that occasion, Master Of Wine had a much harder run in transit but was only 2 lengths away from the mare.
He looks a far better bet to me considering he's almost double the price of the Waller trained galloper.
