The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a race with a long and complex history.

First run all the way back in 1855 as the Queen's Plate, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is now one of the highlights of the Autumn Carnival, attracting local and global attention as one of the world's premier WFA races.

The Queen's Plate in 1855 was named in honour of Queen Victoria and run over a mammoth distance of three miles or about 4,800 metres. Since then, the race has undergone a plethora of name and distance changes. The race has been known by its current moniker since 1954, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia. While the distance has remained at 2,000 metres since 1986.

Arguably the most significant change to the race came in 2014, when the prize purse was upped from $500K to an incredible $4m as part of the revamped Autumn Carnival at Randwick known as "The Championships." The race takes place on Day 2 of the Championships, a week after the Doncaster Mile.

Despite being a race for stayers in the past, it is now the target race for Australia's, and indeed the world's, most talented middle-distance horses. In many ways it has become the Cox Plate of the Autumn, as it continues to grow in stature year on year.

Some absolute champions have taken out this race under its many names and distances. Carbine claimed three titles in a row from 1889 to 1891, while Phar Lap, Tulloch and most recently Winx have all saluted.
