But Melbourne is where the real magic happens, with a glorious 10-race program at Flemington that is bound to serve up some thrilling finishes.

With the rail back in the true, expect tempo to dictate the results across the day with races setting up well for both on-pacers and strong closers depending on early speed.

There’s a runner in the last that I’m absolutely in love with, carrying just 54kg and piloted by a recently married jockey (I’ll let you figure out the rest).

• Mr. Reliable – We know exactly what we’re getting with this horse. He has been consistently producing high-rating performances (via Puntingform) and is a runner you can trust to show up on race day.
• Track & Distance Specialist – Loves Flemington. From three starts here, he’s never finished worse than third. Over the 1000m trip, he’s won twice and placed twice from four starts—this is his ideal setup.

While Cavalry Girl looks a serious contender, she’s coming in off a 41-day break, and I’d rather side with the race-fit, proven performer in Shining Smile at any price above $2.00.
