Best Horse Racing Tipsters in July 2018

Betting and tipping results from July saw a Gold Coast punter with a life-time of racing experience pull-off the highest cash profit award.

While Sky Racing, one of Australia's most recognised racing resources, took the trifecta in the Profit On Turnover (POT) category, with the Top 3 POT figures all coming from race callers at the national broadcaster.

Punters who bet or tip at theGreatTipOff.com and Australia's racing media all qualify for Tipster of the Month when they post at least 15 selections over the period.

We award the top three place getters in two categories:

• Profit on Turnover, here the top three profits made as a percentage of turnover (using an even stake on each selection) get noted; and
• Cash Profit, where the three highest cash profits made using an even $100 on each selection, get noted. 

Highest Cash Profit makers

Sporty, a punter from the sunny Gold Coast in Queensland, has posted his tips at theGreatTipOff.com since we launched back in 2009.

His precision during July was outstanding striking winners from every two tips placed. Using the usual $100 win bet to measure absolute profit, Sporty landed his followers a cracking $3,894, the highest cash profit in the month.

Close behind was Queensland racing form expert from racing website Racenet, Graeme Carey.

Carey found 27 winners over the 31 day period at average odds of $5.14. Punters backing each tip with $100 win bets finished up with a tasty $3,690 profit, representing 36% profit on turnover (POT).

The second runner up is no stranger to this segment. Sky Racing race caller for Queensland country race meets, Russell Leonard, was Tipster of the Year back in 2015 after punters made 32% profit from his best bets in that year.

Picking up other Tipster of the Month awards along the way, he appears once again with $3,120 profit made from $100 bets off his tips posted in the month.

Highest Profit On Turnover

This category saw something which was a first. National broadcaster Sky Racing had three of their race callers represented in the top three positions.

This result provides more support behind the view that race callers have a significant advantage on the punt.

Watching more races than the average punter as part of their role, they build a great mental picture of Australian race horses which has proven to result in profitable tips.

Top of the list in July was country NSW race caller James Tait.

A Gundagai local, Tait has been calling races in country NSW since 2008. A horse owner himself, and coming from a family with a long history in the racing industry, Tait has the perfect CV for a horse racing tipster.

Tait placed 21 tips as part of his race calling duties with Sky Racing in July, finding seven winners at average odds of $5.81. A cracking effort for anyone's standards. That outcome gave the sheep and cattle farmer a massive 94% POT.

Just six percentage points behind him was colleague Tony Wode. The Queensland race caller, who focuses on Townsville races, demonstrated the power of local knowledge by notching up 10 winners from his 29 selections over the period.

His winners averaged a very attractive $5.45 to drive a cracking 88% POT.

Just four percentage points behind was another Sky Racing colleague, 2015 Tipster of the Year, Russell Leonard, with 84% POT.
