Early Mail for Mornington Cup Day
Mornington plays host to their feature meeting of the year, with the Listed Mornington Cup and Hareeba Stakes attracting quality line-ups amongst other high quality races.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with fine weather predicted, participants will be met with a perfect racing surface.
The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit and at this set-up, expect the track to play fair.
Mornington Tips from TheMelbourneMail
Mornington Race 1 Tip #1 Micro $2.25
Going with the favourite in the opening event, as we attempt to launch punters off on a winning note.
This very talented 2YO in the Godolphin blue comes through a very strong effort in the Group 2 VRC Sires last start at Flemington, finishing 1.6 lengths behind a very smart winner in Lightsaber.
He was arguably unlucky not to finish much closer, after enjoying a soft run in transit on the fence. However, that position in big fields can often become the downfall at the pointy end of the race.
He was left with very little galloping room as they entered the straight, and spent most of the run home pushing for gaps and getting off heels of some tiring horses in front and to the side.
The run obviously rated very high, and he easily had the measure of Daily Bugle and also Alegron who line up alongside him yet again here.
The smaller field here will be much more suitable, and he maps to lob right outside the leader.
The 1500m also poses no concern, given he powered through the line over 1400m in the Sires.
It would be amiss to not mention the one slight concern though, and that is that he will be six runs into his debut prep here after first running on Boxing Day.
This is a very long time for a 2YO to be in work at the top level, and it has brought many undone.
But he seems well within himself, and i'm tipping that James Cummings would not have him here if he didn't think he's able to win.
Mornington Race 6 Tip #5 Lofty Star $16
The price here for Lofty Star is simply too good to pass up. Although this is a very hard race, I have him marked much shorter than his current double figure quote.
They say all you can do is win, and that is exactly what this Zoustar colt keeps on doing this prep. He was very good first-up at Sandown over the 1300m, where he dictated terms and scored in a competitive maiden.
He then finished 2nd behind the smart Ellis Park second-up and at his first attempt at the mile last start, managed to beat Derive and Liqueuro with a gutsy on-pace performance.
He comes to the Mornington Guineas here fourth-up, sticking to a mile rock hard fit and ready to peak in the greatest test he has faced to date.
Drawn perfectly in barrier 5 with very minimal speed inside him, look for him to lob right up on the lead and look to control proceedings from there.
His wins this prep have all rated very well, and are competitive with the ratings of some better-class performers in this race such as Dom To Shoot and Let's Karaka Deel.
If he manages to lead and control from the front, he will be a certainty to dig in throughout the final stages and be a huge chance of winning given the tough nature of the horse.
This double figure quote about a gutsy on-pace runner at Mornington is far too attractive to pass up.
