The early market push for several key runners provides us with a significant guide at both major venues this week.
At Flemington, a Waller colt who they are desperate to get to stud must be close to reaching his top and finds a very winnable race.
Whilst at Rosehill, it appears Mark “Junior” Waugh is trying to hit one for six, unleashing on one of his partners’ horses.

Pondalowie
Arrives third-up (2:1-0-0) and looks set to peak after two solid efforts this prep.
She was strong late at Caulfield last start when unsuited by the race shape and getting too far back.
Now draws ideally in gate 5 and the booking of senior jockey Dean Yendall is a big plus.
She maps much closer and profiles as the big improver of the race.
Gatsby’s
Highly regarded Waller colt with stud ambitions who needs to strike soon.
This Listed-level race provides the perfect platform to boost his black-type resume and allow a progression to Group 1 level this prep.
Connections will be highly motivated and with a relatively thin field, this is a must-win.
Middle Earth
The big early betting move last start told the story.
Backed from $8 into $3.60 and delivered.
Now second-up and fitter, with Mark Zahra staying on.
Expect further improvement and this could be a genuine Spring Cups horse in the making.
If he shortens again late, that’s your go signal.
Wolfy
Consistent type for a stable that isn’t afraid to back one with confidence.
Placed 3rd of 13 here last start over 1100m and stays at that trip.
Barrier 1 can be tricky but expect they look to ease off the fence and hook into the better part of the track late.
Market push will tell the story.
Piraeus
A clever set-up from the stable who have used a tick-over trial to maintain fitness.
Tommy Berry jumps on, a notable booking and clear signal of intent.
This is a massive jockey upgrade and if the late support comes, it’s game on.
Uncommon James
Genuine Group-class sprinter who ran well in the Galaxy (3rd of 13) and now drops back to Group 3 level.
Early in the prep, but third-up now and should be nearing his top.
The wide draw is manageable and expect Damien Lane to roll forward and control the race.
West Of Africa
Possesses a booming finish when the tempo is strong and gets his preferred conditions here with sting out of the track (Soft/Heavy stats: 9:4-0-0).
He is drawn wide in gate 12 which suits his racing pattern.
With a hot tempo expected, he can launch late off the back of a fast-run race.
Bojangles
Caught the eye last start when well-supported ($13 into $7) and ran a strong 2nd of 12.
Fitter now third-up and draws softer this time.
Connections led by Mark Waugh are known to have a bet and this looks like another well-timed set-up.
Expect him to be in the finish.
