Flemington plays host to a strong Saturday card for Living Legends race day, with 9 races set for decision over the course of the afternoon.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with fine weather predicted in Melbourne, participants will be met with a dry racing surface.
The rail is out 10m for the entire circuit and at this set-up, expect the outside fence to be superior ground in the straight races.
I'm keen to back Shamino here, who sticks to the 1000m straight-track journey following a dominant display over this distance at Sandown last start in the Doveton Stakes.
After getting back slightly in the field, he had a wall of horses in front of him at the top of the straight and was bolting for a run.
Taking splits 200m from home, he extended brilliantly to squeeze through the field and win on the line by 1.5 lengths extending.
Two runs back in the Listed Miss Security he didn't see out the 1200m journey, so now at least we are very sure that this 1000m trip is his pet distance.
The dry Flemington surface will be very suitable, and I'm willing to give him another chance down the straight given the 1200m was just too far.
Carrying 59kg, he has a great weight advantage on the two favourites at the top of the market.
If he holds form off last start, he'll be very hard to beat.
I could very easily end up with egg on my face (again) here, but I have to give Sondelon another chance on top.
I tipped him at similar odds last start at The Valley over 1200m, when he travelled against his typical racing pattern after settling midfield in the run. Unsurprisingly, he was eased out of the race with 150m to go after being unresponsive to the rider's urgings.
He was found to have mucous and a slow recovery that day, so it was clearly a forgivable performance.
Second-up now out to his ideal 1400m distance, and I'm still convinced that the horse is travelling well.
His two jump-outs at Mornington leading into this prep were very good. In the first one he recorded a runner-up finish over 700m in the quickest heat of the morning, before blowing them all away over 800m in the next hit-out.
From barrier 8 here and with some added fitness, I'm expecting them to push on and take up the lead or at least sit outside the front-runner in clear air.
I concede that it has been a long time between wins for this horse, but if he's overcome his issues from his last start then I expect a strong showing.
He only carries 56kg and we get a big price to find out whether he's back to his best.
