The Coolmore Classic is the first Group One of the year at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. It marks the start of three high-quality weeks, when the Autumn Carnival shifts its attention from Randwick in the Eastern Suburbs to Rosehill in the west.

While most people know the race as the Coolmore Classic, it is officially registered as the TAD Kennedy Stakes, after former Sydney Turf Club committeeman Thomas Arthur David Kennedy. However, Coolmore have sponsored the race since 1996, with the race looking likely to remain the Coolmore Classic for a while yet.

The race was first contested in 1973 and since then, some high class fillies and mares have triumphed. Probably the two most well-known names on the Coolmore Classic honour roll are Emancipation and Sunline. Their superior quality is reflected in the stats, with Emancipation and Sunline being the only two horses to win with 60kg on their backs.

The Coolmore Classic is one of Australia's most competitive races for fillies and mares. Not only is a prize purse of $600,000 up for grabs, but the winning horse gains exemption from the ballot into both the Doncaster Mile and Queen of the Turf Stakes.

It is a race where any horse can win, and this is revealed in the list of recent winners and their starting prices. The last time a favourite won was Typhoon Tracy back in 2009. And in every edition since 2015, the winner has started in double-figure odds, proving what a wide betting race the Coolmore Classic has become.
