The Australian Derby is the premier staying event for 3YOs during the Autumn Carnival, if not the whole year. Indeed, while Melbournians would claim that the Victoria Derby is the pinnacle, the Australian Derby is actually the top ranked event for 3YOs in Australian and New Zealand race classifications.

Derbies are some of the best races around the world, with the Kentucky Derby in the U.S.A. and the Epsom Derby in the U.K. considered some of the world's most prestigious races. Training a 3YO to run out the longer distance is always a challenge, and the horses that win become very valuable animals.

The Australian Derby at Randwick has added prestige because it forms the third and final leg of the Australian Triple Crown. Preceding the Australian Derby is the Randwick and then Rosehill Guineas, which are run over 1,600 and 2,000 metres respectively. It takes a special horse to claim the Triple Crown, and why only five horses have done it in almost ninety years.  

The 2,400 metres of the Australian Derby is a genuine staying challenge for the three-year-olds. That's what makes the Australian Derby such a fascinating betting race. There is a query over many of the horses whether they will run out the distance.

The Australian Derby is one of this country's oldest races. It was first contested back in 1861, and unsurprisingly, has seen numerous greats of the turf take out the prize. Poseidon, Phar Lap, Tulloch, Kingston Town and Octagonal are all on the honour roll, providing an indication of just how good a race the Australian Derby is.
