The VRC Oaks is the feature race of Oaks Day, the third day of the Flemington Carnival. Referred to as "Ladies Day", there is a large focus on women's fashion on Oaks Day, which traditionally takes place on the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup

However, it's the racing that most of us are interested in. The Oaks is the female equivalent of the Victoria Derby, that sees three-year-old fillies racing over a distance of 2,500 metres. As these fillies would have never raced as far as this before, the Oaks can be a tricky betting race, as there's a query over every horse running out the trip.

Having said that, the Oaks is a race where well-supported horses have dominated in the past decade. But that doesn't mean that the long-shots can't have their fun. In 2016, hundred-to-one shot Lasqueti Spirit caused one of the boilovers of the 21st century to win.

With hardly any time for jockeys to find a good spot before hitting the first turn out of the home straight, the Oaks is a race where barriers can play a significant role. However, in such a sapping test of stamina, it is really the superior stayer that wins out.

Like the Derby, the Oaks is a race with a long and prestigious history. It was first run in 1861- the same year as the first Melbourne Cup- and boasts the likes of Samantha Miss, Miss Finland, Research and Surround on its honour roll.
