He is a French import and they do have the potential to fly fresh at their debut Australian run. He did look well over the odds considering the strength of the French form and is likely to acquit himself well here, for a stable that will be desperate to show the influential ownership group a result!   Silmarillion One of Godolphin’s better 3yo fillies, where they have plenty to choose from and arrive here with a good one. She was excellent winning the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley last start, when jumped favourite ($2.50) following strong market support throughout betting. She may have improved again off the last start outing and looks well-suited with a step up in distance to 1400m here.   Chinny Boom Highly regarded Queensland star who has been switched to the Moody/Coleman yard and given a chance to raid the rich Melbourne Spring prizemoney. Although this is much deeper than what she has recently faced, the stable is highly motivated to prove the change of trainer is a good decision. Moody and Kathrine would have taken extra care with this one and should have her primed right up to run a huge race here on debut for their yard.   Red Card Sharp Godolphin sprinting mare who resumed well first-up at Randwick, when beaten by the A-Graders (Bella Nipotina). This looks like a much easier assignment dropping back from Randwick Group 2 level to a restricted Mares open event at Caulfield! Mark Zahra is booked and given any luck and a fair track, I would expect her to be winning.   Randwick Tips   Kreon When Tommy Berry is booked on one for the country trainers, it often pays to follow. He was ultra dominant last start at Goulburn winning by 5 lengths and deserves another trip to town to tackle city highway grade. The stable has become very astute at knowing the right horse to bring to town for this level of race and he will arrive in perfect order and be in the finish.   Well-Timed Has been very well-backed all preparation and with fitness building appears well-suited by the step up to 1400m here. He had excuses last start when drew wide and was hampered shortly after they jumped, and from a low draw here (gate 4) he can atone. With a hungry Nash Rawiller sticking and keen after relinquishing a few good rides on the day due to weight limitations, expect the rider to give this every chance.   I Am Me Reeled off some excellent closing sections in the impressive win here last start and although he did have the gun run, the clock still backed up the performance. I believe they are still hunting an elusive Everest invite, hence will be put into the race again here in an attempt to impress. J Mac takes over from Nash which is interesting, however this is weight-related and of no concern.   Moravia   Quality galloper who has Group 1 credentials and drops way down in grade here for the second-up assignment. He hasn’t seen a weak field like this for a long time and finally gets his chance after a frustrating career where early on he was touted as a genuine stallion prospect, and did contest a Coolmore Stud Stakes last Spring. He doesn't go a yard in the wet and has struck rain-affected tracks wherever he goes, be it NSW or VIC. He can right all those wrongs here on a Newcastle track which will be in brilliant condition. He draws soft to land forward of midfield, gets Jason Collett and just needs the break to storm home over the top.   Race 8 - Benchmark 64 Handicap - 1500m #10 Irish Kisses $5.50 Is going to find the front from barrier 1 and take some catching. She tried similar tactics at the midweeks last Wednesday but was wound in over the concluding stages. The first three Group 1 races of the season in Victoria promised plenty and they delivered. All were enthralling clashes that came down to the wire, but I’m expecting a different situation this Saturday. We will see a dominant display by a runner who will stamp himself as a clear-cut Caulfield Cup favourite after the Underwood Stakes.   Cody Lane found 5 feature race winners in the Autumn. Land his early prices for this week & subscribe to his tip package now!.   Underwood Stakes 2024 Tips and Best Bets Track Conditions: The track is currently rated as a Good 4, but with rain forecasted for Friday, it becomes tricky to predict where the rating will end up by the time the feature race is run. Judging by the forecast we should get back to a Good 4 by the time the Underwood is run or at worst, a Soft 5. The running rail is out 6m, but with how well the Caulfield track has played this year, it should be fair for all runners.   See who the All-In boys like in the Underwood Stakes   The Speed Map Six-year-old mare Deny Knowledge (Barrier 9) will launch out of the gates and likely lead solo. There should be a good battle for spots behind her, but I’m expecting that Bois D’argent (Barrier 4) will settle on the fence with Buckaroo (Barrier 10) on his outside. The favourite Pericles (Barrier 11) has a big task ahead of him to find a position towards the front half of the field. He will be relying on warhorse Vow And Declare (Barrier 12) to go forward or he will be stuck wide without cover. Place Du Carrousel (Barrier 5) will get the run of the race, two pairs back with cover off the fence and be right there to pounce when required. Fawkner Park (Barrier 2) will be worse off midfield and caught on the fence. He will need a peach of a ride from Tyler Schiller and plenty of luck from there.   The Favourite - Pericles $3.00 He was unlucky not to win first-up in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes behind ‘Gentleman Roy,’ but he bounced back dominantly last start at Moonee Valley with a 2.5-length victory. He comes into the Underwood Stakes third-up, where he has yet to win from four tries but has placed on three occasions. As mentioned, he has drawn poorly and will need a few things to go his way if he looks to settle in a positive position, as he has done in both runs this preparation. He has the class and is in terrific form, but with a few question marks on him and the fact there is a possible Caulfield Cup winner in this field, he is a definite lay in this.   Place Du Carrousel trials ahead of The Underwood   Tips 1st – Place Du Carrousel $4.60 I have very high expectations for this five-year-old import for the Anthony & Sam Freedman stable. I believe she will smash this field and stamp herself as a dominant favourite for the Caulfield Cup. It was a superb performance in her first run in Australia in the Autumn, running second in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes behind ‘Via Sistina’ before running a flat race in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes behind ‘Pride Of Jenni’. Her two jump-out performances leading into this have been super, and she looks ready to explode this Spring. She has a cracking first-up record (6:3-2-0) and gets Mark Zahra aboard for the ride. He has been in great form in the last month with eight winners from 36 rides (22.22% Strike Rate). She gets the perfect run in the race and I expect she wins and wins well here.   2nd – Buckaroo $5.50 Coming off a tough win last start in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes over 1600m. If I am so high on Place Du Carrousel, I’ve got to give this five-year-old Fastnet Rock gelding a chance as well. He finished right alongside my top pick last preparation in the Ranvet, so he has the class to mix it with the best. He does have a poor third-up record (5:0-0-1), but with a good run in the race and with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira on board for the ride, he should be finishing top three.   3rd – Coco Sun $14.00 I think this four-year-old The Autumn Sun mare will run a good race here second-up (3:2-0-0). She got through the line well over the concluding stages of her first-up run over 1400m, and the step-up in distance to 1800m will see an improved performance. She maps well and gets the in-form Jamie Kah on for the ride.   4th – Pericles $3.00 There are a few concerns for him in this, but if he does get the luck he will be finishing top three. He had every right to drop out sharply over the concluding stages, but continued to fight to the line. He will strip fitter here and gets the key booking of Nash Rawiller. In a race with only a moderate tempo, he is going to sit forward of midfield and have every chance to storm home. Mchale ($61.00) is also worth a gold coin each way.     Race 7 - Darley Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) - Mick Gannon It's challenging to compare the form lines directly in this race, but Autumn Glow ($2.00) is on the rise and looks set to peak third-up. She appears to be a miler in the making, so the step up to 1400m is ideal. The booking of J Mac strongly suggests she has continued to improve. Erno's Cube, meanwhile, seems to be over the odds and could easily run a place at a good price.   Race 8 - 7+ Sport Stakes (1600m) - Mick Gannon Fangirl's ($2.00) first-up performance was slightly below her best, but she raced on inferior ground and faced an unsuitable race shape. She has since had a tick-over trial and appears to be in excellent condition. While she will need to overcome a start disadvantage against her nearest rival, Royal Patronage, her best form is certainly good enough to secure a win.     Race 9 - The Shorts (1100m) - Luke Hovhanesian I want to have a two-bet play in the shorts with Our Kobison ($13.00) and Mazu ($10.00). Our Kobison was impressive second up, beating all bar Joliestar who had a career peak performance on that occasion. He draws well in barrier 5 to land in a great midfield position and has a perfect 2/2 record third-up. Looks a big price and is still on the up. The other is Mazu who looks to be slowly getting back to his best. Joe Pride has been patient with him and while he is arguably the best wet track sprinter in the country, he is more than capable on dry ground. This week we focus on two heavily favoured Randwick runners, who appear vulnerable in their respective fields and face significant challenges to win. Early in the card at Randwick a Waterhouse/Bott import resumes, however appears to be priced on his first-up heroics last preparation. His Early Market Movers drop Friday.   Horse Racing Lays on Saturday Randwick Race 3 #6 Bear On The Loose $2.50 This galloper seems priced off his impressive Australian debut last preparation, where he showed dominant form and looked poised to make an impact in feature races. While his first-up performance last campaign delivered a strong ratings figure, he regressed in his next start, failing to finish in the placings. Although he has been prepped with several trials leading into this race, his lack of race fitness compared to some of his rivals leaves him vulnerable. Look for a strong finish from the back of the field, but others closer to the pace should have his measure.   Randwick Race 7 #6 Autumn Glow $2.00 There's no doubt this filly is talented, but this is her first encounter with genuine A-Grade competition. In comparison, many of her rivals here come with strong 2yo form and early 3yo campaigns at the highest level. My other concern is barrier 9, which forces her to race from the rear of the field and connections likely would have preferred to settle her closer as her fitness builds. J Mac sticking with her over Ameena shows his long-term faith, likely tied to upcoming Group 1 targets.
