Best plays for George Main Stakes Day
We return to NSW headquarters for Saturday's edition of free best bets, with a cracking 10 race card highlighted by the Group 1 George Main Stakes.
The track is currently rated a Soft 7 with the rail out 7m from the 1600m to the winning post and 4m for the remainder of the circuit.
At this track set-up on-pace runners will hold a slight advantage, but the drier the track gets, the fairer it'll play.
Randwick Tip from Michael Gannon
Randwick Race 2 #9 Cognanc $11.00
I declared this guy last week at big odds, only to see him scratched.
Hopefully they opt to run him this week, because I reckon we'll see a career peak from this guy.
A drying surface and small field is in his favour, as is the gear change of a pulling bit for the first time. This gear will allow the rider to gain far more control, which has been an issue for this guy ever since landing in Australia.
From barrier 6 with only 54kg on his back, he'll be on-pace likely stalking the nominated leader Regal Stage and be poised to strike.
The $11 is big overs for a horse who has a stack of ability and is yet to work it all out.
Saturday could well be the day he does!
Randwick Tip from Dean Watling
Randwick Race 5 #5 Private Eye $5.50
This horse is ready to win third-up now off a very good 'in-between' run last Saturday at Kembla Grange.
He has come back in outstanding form and was dynamic first-up off a slow tempo, showing his smart turn of foot to record the fastest last 600m in 32.60 and a huge last 400m.
His second-up run last Saturday at Kembla Grange was sneaky. He was run off his feet with Big Parade and Embracer tearing away from the pack. But he found the line well and recorded the fastest last 600m dash (33.26) of the entire meeting.
Adding more merit to that effort, he closed off on the inferior ground on the inside and the run was much better than it looked.
There a few positive form factors in his favour for Saturday's clash:
- the blinkers go back on;
- he's drawn perfectly in barrier 7 to sit off a nice tempo; and
- he gets the sting out of the track, where he holds a 2/4 record.
He's on the quick back up and is in super form, which is always a good recipe. He meets a race with a lot of horses who are first-up and look short in the market.
I think he will stand up and make a Epsom Handicap statement come Saturday.
With his race fitness, the $5.50 a great price and I think he will start favourite.
Randwick Tip from Adrian Sciglitano
Randwick Race 6 #4 Mallory $6.50
Keen to be with Mallory in the third leg of the princess series for the fillies.
She arrives here third-up after two unlucky efforts this time in.
First-up when parading in the yard, she showed that she has made physical improvement between her two and three-year old years. She then had no luck in what was a messy Silver Shadow, finishing fifth.
Last start she was outstanding in defeat. In that clash, she raced three wide throughout without cover before charging home to finish 3rd beaten under a length, behind Jamaea who doesn't line up here.
She peaks here third-up, and the step up to 1400m looks perfect for her at this stage of the preparation.
The barrier switch looks ideal and Jason Collett sticks with the filly after riding her on both occasions this time in.
With the speed drawn wide out, she will get every chance to run out a strong 1400m and head towards a Flight Stakes in two weeks time.
