Trainers to Follow

When it comes to profit on turnover (POT) for Saturday’s Sandown Hillside meeting, there is no trainers who produce more than John Leek Jnr and Mick Bell.

Bell tops the standings for winning strike rate at Sandown Hillside with a strong 26.7% (4 winners from 15 runners) and a 197.2% POT.

Bell has just the one runner on the program with ‘Cyclone Sally’ going around in race 4 on the program and is currently paying $10.

Meanwhile, Leek Jnr is currently tracking at a 25% winning strike rate (2 winners from 8 runners) at a whopping 356% POT at Sandown Hillside.

Leek Jnr has also been in quite solid form recently with 16 winners from his last 100 runners.

The Pakenham-based trainer has two runners on the Sandown Hillside program on Saturday with ‘Frigid’ ($5) in race 4 and ‘Secret Plan’ ($11) in race 9.

Over to trainers in the best recent form with runners taking place on the Sandown Hillside program and you cannot look any further than Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.

Waterhouse & Bott have had 23 winners from their last 100 runners (including 6 winners from their last 16).

Waterhouse & Bott also have an outstanding record whenever they take runners to Sandown Hillside with a 19.3% winning strike rate.

The duo have a big day with runners in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland but the two of interest for this meeting is ‘Marching’ ($9) in race 1 and ‘Mensa Missile’ ($13) in race 8.

Also on 23 winners from their last 100 runners is Mornington-based trainer Jerome Hunter.

Hunter has been a model of consistency throughout his training career and has been going at 17% winning strike rate during that time as well as being a profitable trainer to follow.

Hunter has two runners at Sandown on Saturday with ‘Our Redente’ ($4.80) in race 6 and ‘Magarten’ ($9.50) in race 7.

Last, but certainly not least, much like Waterhouse & Bott, Peter Moody does not only have a great recent record, but also has an strong strike rate at the track.

Moody has had 18 winners from his last 100 runners and holds an 18.1% winning strike rate at Sandown Hillside.

Moody has a strong book of runners on the program with ‘Miss Gabbiano’ ($3.60) on debut in race 1, ‘Gentility’ ($6) in race 4, ‘Dance To Dubai’ ($2.70) in race 5, ‘Do Ya Punk’ ($11) in race 8 and ‘Daytona Bay’ ($4.60) in race 9.

12 runners for the ‘Trainers to Follow’ this week. All worthy of having a few dollars on them!

Jockeys to Follow

Two jockeys who not only find themselves in the top 4 for recent form, but are also in the top 3 for winning strike rates at Sandown Hillside.

Blake Shinn is the first of them with 16 winners from his last 100 rides (including 4 from his last 14) and a healthy 16.7% winning strike rate at the track.

Shinn has six rides on the Sandown program on Saturday with ‘Altruist’ ($9) in race 1, ‘Storm King’ ($14) in race 3, ‘Lady Adelaide’ ($8) in race 4, ‘Pitchanun’ ($9) in race 6, ‘Lethal Thoughts’ ($5.50) in race 7 and the favourite in the last (race 9) ‘Normandy Bridge’ ($3.40).

Some handy prices amongst Shinn’s rides!

The other of the two jockeys to have strong recent record and a top strike rate at Sandown is Ben Melham.

Melham has had 15 winners from his last 100 rides and holds a 15.2% winning strike rate at the track.

Melham surprisingly has just the single ride on the program on Saturday with the steer on ‘Mafia’ ($10) in the opening race of the meeting.

When looking at recent form, you can go no further than Beau Mertens and Billy Egan.

Mertens and Egan both boast 18 winners from their last 100 rides and have plenty of rides on Saturday to attempt to keep up or increase that handy record.

Mertens has 5 rides on the program with ‘Strawberry Rock’ ($7) in race 3, ‘Fiasco Tess’ ($15) in race 4, ‘Chartres’ ($17) in race 6, ‘Golden Path’ ($4) in race 7 and ‘Fifth Position’ ($81) in race 9.

Some very solid saver bets to have amongst Mertens rides on Saturday!

Egan meanwhile has a near full book of rides with a steer in every race bar 2 & 5.

The pick of Egan’s rides on Saturday look to be ‘Miss Gabbiano’ ($3.60) in race 1, ‘Jaykayann’ ($2.20) in race 3, ‘Let’s Say Grave’ ($31) in race 4, ‘Bigolino’ ($8) in race 6 and ‘Do Ya Punk’ ($11) in race 8.

Certainly a few to back amongst these, particularly runners that have featured in both the trainers and jockeys to follow sections.
