Stradbroke Specials
All eyes land on QLD, as Eagle Farm hosts its biggest race day of the year, Stradbroke Handicap day.
There are plenty of wide open fields with massive overs on offer according to our two resident tipsters.
Mick Gannon and Luke Hovhanesian have just dropped their best plays. Grab the early prices with them
Eagle Farm - Race 6 The Q22 (2200m)
Mick Gannon Tip
Duais ($8.00) returned off an interrupted prep and 200-day spell when running a 1.5L 4th behind Huetor last start. The figures from that race were through the roof and she produced a rating of 100.
She's a highly credentialed galloper who is only 2.5L off her career-best and if she returns to that form she can get the job done here.
She draws a treat in barrier 3, maps to sit midfield with cover and should get her chance to fight out the finish.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
The enigmatic horse known as Young Werther ($31) is going to pop up one of these days, and I can make a strong case it could happen here.
He ran on really well in the Lord Mayors Cup behind race favourite Without A Fight and that race is going to be a key form reference.
Now after 5 runs he is at peak fitness against a lot of these horses entering this race 2nd and 3rd up.
He gets the soft draw of barrier 1 and Josh Parr sticks in the saddle.
Will get a good track where his best runs have come and looks great value particularly on a place line at $7.
Eagle Farm - Race 7 J.J. Atkins (1600m)
Mick Gannon Tip
Snapback ($8.00) has been luckless this prep, but possesses the turn of foot needed to win a race of this quality.
He's drawn to find cover in the run and looks well suited 4th up and out to the mile.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
Going with a 2-horse play in the J.J. with plenty of value on offer.
The first pick is Californian ($23). I don't love the draw and that is mainly due to how they have ridden this horse at prior starts.
I really think he is better up on the pace, yet they keep dragging him back in the field. However, a large reason for that has been poor wide draws where the map has been against.
From barrier 1 he can posy up much closer to the speed and I have no doubts he will see out the 1600m.
Would be even more confident if Nash had taken the ride.
The second pick is Chevron ($31).
This horse has cost me dearly and hopefully can make amends here.
He is another with a horrible racing pattern, often getting too far back in his runs.
However, stepping up to the 1600m should give him plenty of time to settle and then sprint late.
Has a ripping turn of foot and if the speed goes on here he will be scoring down the centre of the Eagle Farm track.
Eagle Farm - Race 8 Stradbroke Hcp (1400m)
Mick Gannon Tip
Genteleman Roy ($26) drops 4.5kg from his last start win and is a noted second-up performer.
He was restrained from the wide draw last start and was given an easy time of it in preparation for this.
His career peak rating of 105 came second-up over 1400m on a dry deck, the same set-up he gets on Saturday.
Drawn barrier 2, he'll land on speed and could easily run them into the ground.
He looks the best each-way bet of the weekend.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
Stunned we are getting such a huge price for this talented 4YO mare Chain Of Lightning ($23).
This is the value play of the weekend in QLD on an each-way basis.
She was desperately unlucky last start in the Sangster when squeezed for room at the top of the straight.
She managed to pick herself up and sprint hard but was outdone by Ruthless Dame who got a hassle-free run right down the outside.
This mare handles all track conditions and if Linda Meech can find a posy in the front few from the wide barrier, watch out.
Eagle Farm - Race 9 Dane Ripper (1300m)
Mick Gannon Tip
Opal Ridge ($2.75) ran a career peak of 101.1 last start and only needs to repeat that to be winning.
From barrier 12, she draws to find cover in the running line and with even luck she'll put these away.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
Salateen ($18) goes on top.
Was wide and luckless last start in a weaker event from barrier 13.
Now gets a soft draw and Tim Clark aboard which should be a magic combo.
She can posy up much closer to the speed and has one of the best turns of foot in this field.
Great price.
