4/5/19 Morphettville tips: Robert Sangster Stakes Preview

The Robert Sangster Stakes for fillies and mares is a Group One contest over the Morphettville 1200m. 

The betting for the 2019 edition is dominated by interstate raiders Spright, Cool Passion and Jamaican Rain. 

Maca Lil looks like the best of the locals, but appears to be outclassed by the talented runners from across the border. 

On paper there looks to be a lack of early speed, which will play into the hands of the on-pace runners.  

 Morphettville Track Traits

Depsite some light rain forecast in the lead to race day, expect Morphettville to be rated a Good 4 with the rail in the true position 

Jumping from the 1200m at this track, runners have 600m to find a position before the first turn. This gives all runners plenty of time to find their desired position in the run.

Early betting markets have been steady, with the only move of note coming from Lady Cosmology who has been specked from $12 into $9. 

 Key Runners

#1 Spright $4.60

Ran an unlucky second to Sunlight in the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley and then found himself too far back in the slowly run Group Two Sapphire Stakes at Randwick. 

She's clearly the best sprinter in this field but has drawn barrier 15 in a race that looks to lack strong tempo. 

Given the lack of early speed engaged, she has a huge task ahead of her. 

#2 Cool Passion $6.00

Stuck to her task in the Group One Canterbury Stakes, finishing 2.5-lengths behind gun Trapeze Artist. 

She has the form and has drawn perfectly to take advantage of the predicted moderate tempo. 

It looks likely she'll get the run of the race up on the pace and if that's the case, she'll be hard to beat. 

#6 Jamaican Rain $7.00

Was backed into equal favourite on a rain affected track in the Group One Coolmore Classic, before finishing 12th and pulling up lame. 

She does her best work on wet-tracks and at Group One level on a dry track she looks to be exposed. Pass!

#8 Bella Martini $20.00

Failed miserably over 1500m and has since been freshened.

She has won four from eight at the 1200m and has drawn perfectly in barrier one. 

From the rails draw, look for her to push forward and hold a more forward position in the run, likely to be sitting just off the leader's heels. 

She ticks plenty of boxes and looks well over the odds at $20. 

#13 Anjana $8.00

A talented filly who won her first two starts this prep, before finding two better over 1100m at Morphettville. 

This is a huge rise in class and looks a bridge too far. No thanks!

#14 Thrillster $7.00

Has drawn poorly and connections have shown the tendency to go back from a wide gate. 

Her first-up run was impressive when flashing home from near last, but with limited speed engaged it's unlikely she'll be able to repeat the dose. 

She'll sit near Spright in the run and it's likely that runner will give her windburn when the sprint goes on. Next!

#15 Lady Cosmology $12.00 > $9.50

This filly from WA will lead them up and looks set to get all the favours in the lead. 

She has shown plenty of ability in her home state and there is no reason to question that form won't hold up here. 

She's not as talented as the likes of Spright and Cool Passion, but with the on-pace favours she'll be in this for a long way.
