Best bets for midweek racing at Canterbury by Joshua Reed
Mid-week racing returns to Canterbury for the first time since early March, on Wednesday. Sunshine is forecast over the coming days, which should see the track improve from a soft surface into the Good range. The rail will be in the true position for the meeting, which will favour those from inside barriers and on-pace runners.
Canterbury Race 1 Tip: The Early Play #1 Gem Song
The Kris Lees trained colt was very impressive on debut, jumping well and taking a forward position. The son of Your Song hit the lead on turning and showed a nice turn of foot in victory.
Although he has drawn wide, he possesses early pace to overcome the poor draw. He is going to be fitter for his first-up run and with Jason Collett on the reins, the ride will be confident from start to finish.
Gem Song is currently $4.80 fixed odds.
Canterbury Race 2 Tip: Best Bet #9 Seasons
The Les Bridge trained filly is the deserved favorite in this race. Her only career run was at this track and distance last December, running a 0.4 length second. On that occasion, she had to avoid heels when the tempo eased at the 700m mark and then again as she made her way around the home turn.
The three-year-old by Sebring has relished the break and looks primed for a win off the back of two soft trials. From the inside draw, expect her to sit a touch closer than last start and prove too strong for her rivals. Seasons is currently $2.70 fixed odds.
Canterbury Race 5 Tip: Next Best #3 Seaway
This Ocean Park colt has a tremendous record in his short career and he looks very well placed here. Last start he ran well despite being slow to begin when up in grade. Judging by where the winners were coming from on the day, his run was full of merit.
From the draw and with the speed inside him, Tye Angland should be able to get him to relax in a nice position. He is much fitter going into this race third-up and drops back in grade. The fixed odds price of $5.50 is massive overs and it should pay to bet early on this one.
Canterbury Race 7 Tip: The Get Out Stakes #4 Molten
The training combination of Peter and Paul Snowden have got this gelding flying at the moment. Last start in the same grade he led the whole way, showing a nice kick in the straight to hold his rivals at bay. The blinkers were added for that run, which sharpened him up nicely.
Although he goes up 1.5kg here, he drops back in distance by 50m and the lack of speed inside him should ensure a forward position in the run. He is a very fit horse off the back of three runs this preparation so expect him to be on the pace and prove too difficult to run down in the latter stages. Molten is currently $4.80 fixed odds.
