Early Mail for Caulfield
Caulfield plays host to Victorian Owners and Breeders Race Day this weekend, with a number of exciting VOBIS races on the nine-race card as well as the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with fine weather predicted, participants will be met with a perfect racing surface.
The rail is situated in the True position for the entire circuit and at this set-up, there could be a slight on-pace advantage.
It will pay to watch the first few races closely.
Caulfield Tips from TheMelbourneMail
Caulfield Race 1 Tip #2 Mahamedeis $2.00
A short favourite to kick start the big program at Caulfield, but in my eyes is deservedly short and looks ultimately hard to beat here over the 2000m.
Mahamedeis comes into this run fourth-up into what has been a very promising campaign so far, most notably with a third placing behind Hang Man in the Group 3 Easter Cup over this track and distance last start.
He sat back and wide with cover in that run, and was one of the widest horses on the turn when they began to straighten up.
He boxed on very well into third and having form behind Hang Man and Persan rates extremely highly for a race of this nature.
It was obvious he was going to be in for a good prep when he flashed through the line to finish only 3.5-lengths off some of Australia's best milers in the G2 Blamey three starts back.
He's rock hard fit now and weighted very well here to rejoin the winners list over a distance at which he is a four-time winner.
His last start rating was already higher than any other horse in this race, and I believe he has the scope to take that even higher and go towards a career-peak rating now.
If you're looking for one at value which will lead and be in the race for a very long way, Queen La Diva could be a great quinella option at big odds.
With that said though, Mahamedeis is very hard to beat and anything around even money looks a bet for mine.
Caulfield Race 3 Tip #3 Beau Rossa $1.85
Not often I will be willing to take something at below even money, but this highly exciting 3YO gelding out of the Will Clarken stable actually looks overs at the $1.85 quote (as of Thursday night).
He comes here third-up into the campaign, and is looking to continue building the picket fence following two wins this campaign.
There was the fresh win at Morphettville over 1000m in a BM64, where he accounted for a small field with ease.
The stable then opted to bring him to Melbourne and if you haven't seen footage his effort at Sandown, I highly recommend you go and do so.
After settling behind midfield in the run, he ambled up to them and put the field away by 7 lengths eased down.
He easily could've won by over 10 lengths had he been fully tested to the line. Unbelievably, he still ran the fastest last 200m split of the race by a huge 4 lengths.
This looks like a very serious horse, and now third-up into this VOBIS Sires Guineas he strikes a very winnable Saturday metro race.
Most of his rivals have seemingly found their mark this campaign, or are coming off maiden wins. They would need to improve out of sight to get close to the rating that Beau Rossa tabled last start.
Coming up to the mile for the first time looks absolutely no worries at all.
The way he relaxes in the run coupled with the serious turn of foot, makes him an excellent miler prospect.
I have him marked $1.50 and with a very soft run from barrier three under Jamie Kah, I couldn't even try to talk you into any other runner.
