Best plays for Mornington Cup Day
Mornington plays host to one of their standout meetings of the calendar year, with the Mornington Cup and Hareeba Stakes both at Listed level.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with sunny weather predicted, participants will be met with a perfect racing surface.
The rail is true the entire circuit, at this set-up, the track should be playing fairly.
Flemington Tips from TheMelbourneMail
Mornington Race 2 Tip #1 Yaka Ishi $2.10
Really like the way this Griffiths & De Kock two year old has started his racing career, and I think it's time for him to break through today.
He was very good at Pakenham on debut, settling last off an even tempo and flying home late to run fourth with a meeting fastest last 200m sectional.
He then led the field up in the G2 VRC Sires' as an $81 chance, and fought extremely hard to finish 3rd behind two very talented runners.
He is sure to be peak fit here, and from barrier two he can jump and land right up on the bunny again.
In the much smaller field of eight runners here, he can be able to control the tempo to his liking, and the 1500m therefore will be absolutely no issue.
Craig Williams retaining the ride is always a good sign, and in a race with very limited chances he will be right in the finish again.
Mornington Race 5 Tip #7 Upswing $9.50
Very impressed with the prep of Upswing so far. So much so that I think he is a genuine top three chance in this race and looks way over the odds at the current quote.
He was massive first up at The Valley, settling last in the run and working home very well without much luck at all behind Zerelle.
He then was ok second up, running 5th at Sandown over the mile in what was possibly a touch of 'second-up syndrome'.
They sent him out an $8 chance last start, third up to 1800m and he won very impressively beating Irish Butterfly in a smart race.
It was a deserved win, and I'm sure the horse is racing in near career best form this time around.
Fourth up and ready to peak again, he gets to 2000m which is a massive positive, and will only carry 55.5kg for his troubles.
The wider draw is no issue, in fact it suits his racing pattern and a sweeping course like Mornington will play right into his style.
