Mick's Best Bets for Monday's racing
We head to Canberra today for a cracking card of racing, including the Canberra Cup over 2000m and Guineas for the 3YO's over 1400m.
The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail out 5m from the 1000m-380m and 3m the remainder.
Below are my best bets on what looks a competitive meeting.
Horse Racing Tips from Michael Gannon
Canberra Race 1 #4 Reateros $1.85
We were with this son of Artie Schiller on an each-way basis last start, when he produced a huge run into 2nd at $21.
He was beaten by the all conquering combination of Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman who was aboard Endorsement, who jumped a short price favourite.
The rise to 1400m is of no concern and from barrier 8 in the small field, he'll get every chance to get to the outside and run over the top late.
You don't have to be a genius to find him, but at the $1.85, he's still value. Rated $1.60.
Canberra Race 2 #8 Italian Informant $3.50
This talented gelding has raced without luck for much of his career. This partly due to his poor manners, but, what we do know is that some ability.
He finally broke his maiden last start, when running over the top of his rivals at Wyong, producing the 2nd highest rating of his career.
He's been given a 7-week freshen and a soft Wyong trial in readiness for this and looks set to produce a carrer peak run today.
The booking of Tommy Berry is a fair indication that the horse is flying and from barrier 5, he should get every possible.
There's plenty of the $3.50 available around town. I've rated him a $2.80 chance.
Canberra Race 3 #3 Mascherata $4.20
I love betting into these races. Every man and his dog will be backing Devils Triangle, who comes off a 2nd to Shelby Sixtysix.
We all know what Shelby has gone on to achieve, but I think it's best we don't get caught up in the hype and take a stupid price Devils Triangle.
Granted Devils Triangle smashed Mascherata last time they met, but Mascherata gets a 4.5kg swing in the weights and gains the services of Tim Clark.
There's no doubt in my mind that she'll strip much fitter from her first-up run and it wouldn't surprise if she jumped out of the ground today.
I've marked Mascherata $2.80 and at the current quote of $4.20, she's the value play of the day.
