Last week was “bittersweet” for Lays followers when we successfully potted King Of Sparta, however were left with egg on our face for a strong set against Godolphin colt Anamoe.
This week we are again focused on the Golden Slipper curse with a star 2YO returning at 3, who looks a high-risk proposition for punters.
Whilst at Caulfield a hype horse jumps from a last-start Sandown maiden win to the group 3 McNeil Stakes. Nope!
Avoid both at their current short quotes in betting.
There is plenty of pressure on this colt after the recent ownership change to Coolmore.
The expectations have grown and they are to get him to Stud with some Stakes grade wins as a 3YO.
I’m always keen to take on the “good 2YO’s” who are returning at 3, as they are more often than not burnt out following an arduous campaign.
He was good at 2 however a lot can change over their time off, and they can sometimes regress significantly upon a return to racing.
He is priced on his big run in the Golden Slipper where he placed second and is almost certain to be over-bet.
Avoid.
Looks very smart following two career starts, however he has been thrown in the deep end for this.
Things get worse when you see the field against plenty of experienced and classy 3YO’s.
The last start win at Sandown by 6 lengths will sucker in plenty of the mugs, as it was visually impressive (against a rubbish field).
This is a huge leap up to Group 3 level from the recently contested Maiden grade event, and he will need to be something very special to make the grade and win.
Caufield is also a trick track when compared to Sandown and he won’t have the luxury of room to wind up in the straight.
He looks a great risk to my eye at the current poison odds.
Lay.
