Wattegos put in a strong first-up performance, finishing 7th but only 3 lengths off the winner.
Given he was resuming over an unsuitable distance, the effort was more than creditable.
His rivals were either rock-hard fit or had the map and track pattern in their favour, while he was positioned near last in a race run at an even tempo.
Despite racing against the pattern of the day, he closed off well and will take plenty of benefit from the run.
Look for him to be very hard to beat when stepping up in distance next time out.
The race shape worked against Peleus, as they crawled in front and set a tempo slower than a dinner at the in-laws.
This forced him to make his own luck from near last, peeling off heels and attempting to loop the field.
Given the soft early fractions, he did exceptionally well to bridge the margin on the winner and was doing his best work late.
Now with race experience under his belt, expect him to be right in the finish next time, particularly if he finds a race with genuine tempo.
