The Galaxy is one of the five Group One races held on Golden Slipper day at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. It is also the first Group One sprint race of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, where Sydney's best speedsters dash around the tight turning Rosehill track for the $700,000 on offer.

As well as the good amount of prize money up for grabs, the winner of the Galaxy gains exemption from a ballot in the T J Smith Stakes, which is one of Australia's most lucrative sprint races. Nevertheless, winning a Group One is always special, especially on Golden Slipper day, arguably Sydney's best day of racing.

One downside that means that the Galaxy doesn't always get the best field is that it clashes with the William Reid Stakes down in Melbourne. This race is run on Friday night at Moonee Valley, the night before Golden Slipper day.

The Galaxy is an interesting betting race, where plenty of value is always up for grabs. That's because it's a race that is not only run under handicap conditions, but generally draws a large field.

Because of this, the Galaxy hasn't been a race for favourites. In fact only five favourites have won the race since it was inaugurated back in 1972. And before Russian Revolution's win in 2017, seven consecutive editions saw the winner salute at double-figure odds.

The Galaxy is also a relatively new addition to the Golden Slipper program. It was run at Randwick Racecourse every year from 1972 to 2012, bar one, when it was held at Warwick Farm. However, since 2013, it has called Rosehill home, where it has only enhanced the standout day of racing in Sydney's west.
