The Queen of the Turf Stakes is one of the four Group One races held on the second day of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse. Raced under it's sponsor's name as the Coolmore Legacy Stakes, the Queen of the Turf Stakes, as the name suggests, is a race for the girls.

The race is open to fillies and mares who are three-years-old and above. And under the Weight fotr Age scale, the Queen of the Turf has become a high quality race where the best female horses assemble to fight it out for Group One glory and the million dollar prize purse.

First raced back in 1972, the Queen of the Turf Stakes earned Group One status in 2005. However, the race became extra special in 2014, when it was moved from Rosehill to Randwick as part of the Championships.

The most famous winner of the race was More Joyous, who did the double in 2011 and 2012. The Gai Waterhouse-trained mare started at an odds-on price on both occasions. This was after Typhoon Tracy in 2010, who also won the race at a very short starting price.

However, since 2013, the race has become a trickier assignment for punters, with only one favourite saluting in this period. With large fields, and some of the best fillies and mares in this country, the Queen of the Turf Stakes has become a definite highlight during the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The famous 1,600-metre start at Randwick also adds to the growing prestige of the race. With a long gallop on the back straight before hitting the first turn, even the horses drawn in the car park have a chance of finding a good spot in the run.
