Lay Betting Tips: who to avoid on the punt 16/11/24
This week we focus on two runners that come up good risks as over-bet favourites in their respective races.
At Caulfield a high-profile popular runner has been up and racing for an eternity this preparation, with the “Grad Final” run likely to have been last start in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, where far from impressive.
Whilst at Newcastle’s stand-alone Saturday meeting a popular rider/trainer combination has not been missed, however faces a tricky speed map for gate 1 and should struggle for racing room late.
Jimmy Beeson continues to nail his lays at a good rate.

Horse Racing Lays on Saturday
Caulfield Race 4 #1 Coleman $2.60
Coleman has been the hyped three-year-old all Spring, yet has failed to deliver each time the market has backed him.
Admittedly, this race is a much easier assignment compared to his recent outings, as he’s dropping down from the elite Group 1 level of the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
However, I don’t believe this justifies his current short odds.
In the Coolmore, he looked like a tired horse, merely grinding to the line for a midfield finish (7th of 14) beaten decisively by over six lengths.
I suspect he was primed to peak in the Group 1 Stallion-making race, and this appears to be an afterthought run.
There’s a strong chance he’s on the decline now and may race flat.
The travel between Melbourne and Sydney this prep could also start to take its toll.
Around Caulfield's 1400m track, I expect those racing in forward positions to hold the upper hand, leaving Coleman as an excellent risk.
Avoid.
Newcastle Race 5 #5 Pippie Beach $2.50
Pippie Beach seems over-bet as the favourite in this race, likely due to the popular Waller/Nash trainer-rider combination.
She has been running at Benchmark level for several races now, and although she’s placed in her last two starts, the performances haven’t been particularly impressive.
In her last start at Rosehill she seemed to have every opportunity, settling just behind the leaders and benefiting from an ideal run.
Yet, she failed to fully let down and reel them in.
With no exceptional early speed, barrier 1 could be a disadvantage here.
She’s highly likely to be crossed early potentially ending up three-back along the rails, which could leave her short of racing room.
Traffic issues and a lack of genuine class to make her current price unfavourable.
Lay.

Horse Racing Tips for Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2024
Can we talk about how superb it is that we have two Group 1 races this Saturday after the Cup Carnival last week?
One of these top-class events is the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, offering a $1 million prize pool and attracting a high-quality field.
We’re set to see a rematch between Another Wil and Jimmysstar, who last faced off in the Group 2 Damien Oliver at Flemington two weeks ago.
While I have high respect for the Ciaron Maher-trained duo of Another Wil and Jimmysstar at the top of the market, it’s another stablemate that looks like the best betting option.
Cody Lane found 5 feature race winners in the Autumn.
Land his early prices for this week & subscribe to his tip package now!.
Track Conditions
The track is currently rated as a Good 4, but with a hot day forecast for Saturday it could firm up to a Good 3.
The rail is set out 6m and while it’s expected to favour on-pace runners, the Caulfield track has played fairly even this Spring.
Caulfield Race 9 - Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2024
The Map
No surprises for the likely leader here, Buffalo River (12) is almost certain to roll to the front.
Tuvalu (15) is expected to come across with Buffalo River and settle outside the leader, while Run Harry Run (2) and Gentleman Roy (9) should take up ideal positions just behind the pace.
Favourite Jimmysstar (1) will find himself in a tricky midfield position on the rail and will be looking for a clear passage, while his stablemate Another Wil (5) will likely settle just outside him.
Further back, contenders Charm Stone (3), Climbing Star (6), and Southport Tycoon (9) will position towards the rear, appreciating the strong early tempo up front.
Another Wil wins at Randwick
The Favourite
#7 Jimmysstar – $3.30
I wouldn’t be surprised if stablemate Another Wil is the favourite by the time this race jumps on Saturday.
Despite a 1.5kg swing in Jimmysstar’s favour, he was soundly beaten by Another Wil last start, and I expect the same outcome here. From barrier 1, he’ll need plenty of luck to find a clear path, and even if he does, he’ll be chasing Another Wil.
While Jimmysstar is a high-quality horse, he’ll need everything to go his way on Saturday to win. He’s a tempting lay at these odds.
Tips
1st – #1 Southport Tycoon – $10.00
It’s surprising that the Manikato Stakes winner is paying $10 in a field like this.
His two Sydney runs were strong, including a third behind Overpass and a ninth in the Golden Eagle after coming from the back of a 20-horse field.
This race looks ideally set up for him, as he should be able to track Another Wil and get a nice run into contention.
Mark Zahra returns to the saddle for the first time since his brilliant ride in the Manikato, and I think Southport Tycoon has the turn of foot to capture his second Group 1 of the spring.
2nd – #4 Another Wil – $3.60
Another Wil is expected to start as the favourite, and rightly so.
He beat Jimmysstar convincingly last start, and while there’s a 1.5kg swing in his stablemate’s favour, he should get a similarly perfect run here.
Jamie Kah retains the ride, and her record on this horse is impressive, with seven wins from eight rides.
Between the two favourites, Another Wil is definitely the one to back.
3rd – #6 Climbing Star – $13.00
This mare looks ready to peak third-up here.
If she can replicate her third-up performance from last preparation in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes, she’ll be a serious contender.
Her first-up effort in the Manikato was excellent (finishing fifth), and she had little luck in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes last start when trying to come from the back.
This race’s tempo suits her well, and she’s nicely weighted.
Worth a bet at double figures!
4th – #7 Jimmysstar – $3.30
It’s hard to shake the feeling that Jimmysstar could end up as a hard-luck story here.
He’s almost certain to be stuck behind tiring leaders, and unless Damian Lane can pull off something special, he might end up giving too much ground to his key rivals.
If he does get a clear run, he’ll definitely be in the finish, but with a few doubts over his luck, he’s not great value at these odds.

Horse Racing Tips for the Thousand Guineas 2024
With one formline likely to dominate as a key reference for punters in this year’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas for three-year-old fillies, surprises should be minimal, especially with a firm track expected.
For me, the Group 3 Vanity Stakes over 1400m at Flemington stands out as a stronger form reference than the Group 3 Carbine Club.
Although the Carbine Club was contested over the same mile distance as the Guineas and produced the early favourite, the Vanity looks to have been the more insightful race for this context.
As always, tactics will play a role, but one filly stands out as the superior galloper on any track condition, with the greatest potential for improvement.

Thousand Guineas 2024 Tips and Best Bets
Track Conditions
With clear skies and warm temperatures forecast for the 48 hours leading up to race day, we should be looking at a Good surface.
Ideally, it’ll hold at a Good 4, although with Saturday’s temperature expected to exceed 30 degrees, we may see it firm to a Good 3.
The Speed Map
Too Darn Lizzie, at long odds, is expected to cross from a middle gate to lead in a race lacking much on-speed pressure.
Positioning just behind the leader is Dominetta ($14.00), who is peaking third-up.
Longshot Another Prophet is drawn well and should get a comfortable run tucked away from an inside barrier, alongside the lightly raced Stage ’N’ Screen ($12.50).
Close behind them will be another roughie, Let’s Fly, a recent maiden winner at Kembla.
Vanity Stakes winner Zeitung can settle closer to the speed from an ideal draw and is likely to slot in around midfield and one off the fence.
Double Market ($19.00) and Lovelycut ($11.00) are in similar positions.
Carbine Club winner and early favourite Aeliana will likely drift back from a wide barrier to settle towards the rear, along with Tasmanian raider Geegees Mistrust ($12.00) who is drawn even wider.
The Favourite
There’s no question Aeliana has the quality and the finishing speed to take out what appears to be a moderate edition of the Guineas.
However, her price is a risk given she’ll be settling well off a likely moderate pace.
Jockey James McDonald may need to get her rolling from the half-mile mark to stay in contention.
At an early price of $3.40, she’s under the odds!
Neil’s Best Bet
The race looks perfectly set up for Zeitung ($4.20) from Godolphin, who should settle around midfield, one off the fence.
He’s primed fitness-wise for the extra furlong, and his late burst from well back to win the Vanity was impressive and can’t be overlooked.
The Dangers
Lovelycut ($12.00) offers value and looks well-placed third-up, coming off a tough run behind Zeitung.
Of course, Aeliana, shooting for three consecutive wins, is a major chance if she can get a good run into the race from the 600m mark.
Stage ’N’ Screen also presents great value at around $13.00.

Saturday Horse Racing Tips at Morphettville 16/11/24
For the first time in a long while, there are only eight races scheduled at Morphettville Parks, featuring predominantly small fields.
However, that hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm.
It’s quite the opposite, as we’re feeling bullish about our chances with several well-placed, sharp improvers.
With warm weather in the forecast and the rail back in the true position, we expect the track to favour on-pacers significantly.

Best Bets for Morphettville by Heath Pope
Race 3 #3 Walk Like An Angel $4.50
This above-average mare has spent most of her career competing against much stronger horses, including five starts in Black-type company.
Her first-up run was one to overlook, as she simply couldn’t warm up after getting back in the field and facing interference from a wide draw.
Now, she has dropped back sharply to BM68 grade.
Notably, her only two previous wins have come second-up, with her only second-up miss occurring in Group 3 company.
Her sole run on the Parks circuit also resulted in a win.
She couldn’t be better placed here, and she’s drawn ideally to secure a low-effort run.
Rates $3.25.
Race 4 #1 Great Maximus $2.80
This handy, lightly-raced four-year-old gelding will strip fitter for this race after a completely luckless first-up run, where he was never on the track.
On that occasion, he also started hard in the market in a much tougher BM78 affair.
He comes in fitter after that run, drops back to BM66 grade and maps for a favourable run from an ideal inside draw.
Having Toeroek back aboard is another positive.
Rates $2.50.

Newcastle Race 5 #5 Pippie Beach $2.50
Pippie Beach seems over-bet as the favourite in this race, likely due to the popular Waller/Nash trainer-rider combination.

Looking for more of his tips? His Early Market Movers drop Friday.

Race 3 #3 Walk Like An Angel $4.50

Now, she has dropped back sharply to BM68 grade.
Notably, her only two previous wins have come second-up, with her only second-up miss occurring in Group 3 company.

Rates $3.25.

On that occasion, he also started hard in the market in a much tougher BM78 affair.

Lay Betting Tips: who to avoid on the punt 16/11/24 |
|

Lay.

Horse Racing Tips for Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2024 |
|
