The George Ryder Stakes is a WFA race held on Golden Slipper day at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse during the Autumn Carnival. This is the only day of the year where five Group Ones are held at the one track on one day, with the George Ryder Stakes being the most prestigious and lucrative event after the Golden Slipper itself.

It's not just the one million dollar prize purse that makes the George Ryder Stakes a target race. The race is often thought of as the main lead-up race to the Doncaster Mile at Randwick, with the winner of the George Ryder gaining exemption from a ballot for the race.

However, the George Ryder stakes is a fantastic title to hold in its own right. Inaugurated back in 1903 as the Railway Stakes, the race was renamed in 1974 to honour racing administrator and stud master George Ryder.

Unsurprisingly, there have been some champions of the turf that have saluted in the race's hundred-plus years of history. Manikato, Emancipation and Lonhro all won the George Ryder back-to-back in two successive years.

But the undoubted queen of the race is Winx, who in 2019 will look to claim her fourth consecutive victory, in what is thought to be her penultimate run. In the 2017 edition of the race, Winx recorded the second-biggest winning margin of her career, romping away by an astonishing 7.3 lengths.

Rosehill-based trainer Chris Waller has also fared very well in the George Ryder Stakes. Not only has he trained all of Winx's victories, but he saddled up three separate winners in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 editions of the race.
