Best bets from The Valley
Happy Valley hosts the first night meeting of the season, with pleasant weather expected for all 8 races.
Leading jockey Joao Moreira is absent for this meeting, while Zac Purton who sealed a hat-trick at Sha Tin over the weekend, will have 8 mounts.
Trainer Danny Shum had the best results last Sunday with a double and will send 9 horses to compete.
Other local trainers like Manfred Man, Jimmy Ting and Pierre Ng also hold some key chances over the card.
Happy Valley Race 2 #7 Hero Star $4.50
Hero Star is an honest horse who always puts himself in the finish.
He is a 3-time course and distance winner and looks primed to strike first up.
At his last start on the 13th of July, this Kaphero gelding made all the running and won by 1.25 lengths.
On that occasion, he beat strong rivals such as Wood On Fire and Gallant Walking.
This 7YO gelding only needs to keep his residual fitness from the last campaign to be very hard to beat in this event.
His latest trial proved this should be of no concern.
Matthew Poon has scored 1 win and 2 seconds from his 3 starts on board this horse.
So him retaining the ride is a great sign.
There is no obvious leader in the field, so Hero Star from gate 4 can lead easily and will be very hard to catch.
Happy Valley Race 5 #4 Hardly Swears $3.10
Hardly Swears just transferred to Pierre Ng stable and the local trainer will want to start the season with a bang.
He has great first-up results and with Zac Purton on board, he will be in the finish.
This 8YO is now at a career-low mark of 50, however he showed that he is competitive with an impressive performance in his latest barrier trial on 2 September.
Jumping from gate 1 is a big advantage for him and he is expected to sit just behind the leading division.
Take What You Need and Noir Rider should lead and there is enough pace in this race to allow Hardly Swears to fly at them late.
