The Group 1 Moir Stakes typically attracts a high quality field of sharp sprinters and this year is no different, with a number of the nation's best speedsters engaged.
Expect warp speed early with a number of runners challenging for the lead, and the coveted close to speed positions.
I am with one who arrives via the Concorde Stakes at Randwick, where he finished runner-up behind the classy Nature Strip.
Race Moonee Valley Track Traits
The Moonee Valley surface is currently rated a Good 4, with the rail out 4m for the entire circuit.
With the rail out and fine conditions predicted for Friday night in Melbourne, the track could advantage leaders.
As always a close watch is advised early to determine any bias.
Racing Market Movers
There have been no significant moves in betting at this stage, with all runners remain steady.
Key Runners
#1 Trekking $12
Faces D-Day here for his chance to represent Godolphin in their slot for The Everest.
He will be primed and ready to fire and does sprint well second-up (9:3-2-0) into a campaign.
The first-up run (3 of 8) in the Concorde at Randwick was sound, and he could certainly improve off that.
#2 Wild Ruler $7.00
Is another coming via the Concorde at Randwick, where he chased hard to finish second behind The Everest favourite Nature Strip.
He is very capable on his day and is drawn to get the perfect suck run here when launching from gate 4.
Although well found in betting at $7.50, he is a top chance in this style of race. Yes.
#3 The Inferno $4.60
Shocked a few when winning here last start, where he toppled the hot-pot Portland Sky.
He came with a barnstorming run to collar the leaders last time out, and could easily repeat that here given a strong tempo.
Look for him very late. Leading chance.
#4 Portland Sky $11
Was backed as if unbeatable ($3 into $2.30) here last start, where he can be forgiven for just missing after a torrid run close to speed.
He had genuine excuses first-up where his condition just gave out late, and with that run under the belt he will improve here.
The draw in gate 8 is ok, as he'll be able to track noted speedster Profiteer across the face and most likely sit outside the leader throughout.
#5 September Run $9.00
Gun mare who ran a bottler first up here when placing 3 of 9 behind The Inferno.
Has an unattractive racing pattern for these short sprint trips getting well back in the run, however she always seems to flash late.
If they went absolute warp speed up front, she should be the one storming home over the top. Does she get the tempo to suit?
#6 Swats That $18
Comes up big overs at $18 to my eye, although granted it is a hot race.
She is another run-on profile that will need the speed on to be able to get home over the top.
The Troy Corstens camp have reported she is flying in trackwork at home, and is a much better chance than the current odds suggest. Include.
#7 Brooklyn Hustle $14
Is another run-on profile who sits much lower in the pecking order here against the big guns. Avoid.
#8 Ballistic Lover $10
Has speed to burn and comes via different formline to most after winning the Carlyon at this track and trip first-up.
Expect her to be right up in the firing line early and will need to absorb plenty of pressure to be winning.
Looking to others.
#10 Shaquero $26
Has the Waller factor, but will need more than that to beating this field over an unsuitably short 1000m scamper. No
#11 Profiteer $3.90
Gun 2YO colt who jumped favourite in the Golden Slipper last season. He returns here as a 3YO and looks the likely leader with no weight (52kg) on his back.
They don't often return well following a brutal Slipper campaign, which seems to flatten young horses.
I'm happy to oppose at the short odds here and against a high-quality field of older horses. Lay.
Of The Others
#9 Miss Albania was forced to track wide here last start and given a more economical run, could surprise a few in this. Watch betting late.
