Mick's Horses to Follow

The feature Scone meeting delivered some high-class racing and revealed several runners to follow as they progress deeper into their campaigns.

Mick Gannon has singled out two key gallopers who caught the eye in unsuitable race shapes and look primed to win next time out under more favourable conditions.

Race 1 – Jumeirah Beach

Jumeirah Beach was brave in defeat, chasing home the winner to finish less than a length away after settling more than 7 lengths off the lead in a race that was run at a crawl—10 lengths slower to the 600m than standard.

The race shape was completely against him, but he still closed off powerfully, indicating he’s ready to win.

Stick with him over a similar trip next start when he can find a race with a more genuine tempo.

Also worth noting: Highborn Harry ran on well in the same race under similar conditions and deserves a spot in the blackbook too.

Race 6 – Welwal

Welwal produced a sneaky good run in Race 6, settling last and spotting the leader a massive 10 lengths at the 600m.

Despite traffic issues, he surged late to grab sixth, ducking and weaving through the pack.

A talented galloper with a strong turn of foot, he’s building nicely into his prep and looks ready to peak third-up over 1400m or 1500m.

Keep a close eye on his next assignment—he’s ready to explode.
