Mick & Luke's top picks for Group 1 racing
The fun doesn't stop this Saturday with Group Racing action right across the state.
Luke nailed the Group 1 Robert Sangster last week with an $18 pop saluting in style.
The boys are back to help you have another fill up, Mick Gannon and Luke Hovhanesian have just dropped their best plays for the features.
Doomben - Doomben 10,000 (1200m)
Mick Gannon Tip
Giga Kick takes up a huge percentage of the market at $1.80 and looks poison odds.
If this race was over the Randwick 1200m that price would be justified in this field, but over the 1200m at Doomben he's a big risk.
The scratching of Eduardo takes some speed out of the race and really sets up for the likes of Aft Cabin who maps a treat and Overpasss who will be on speed.
I'm leaning towards Aft Cabin ($6) who arrives off a 4-week freshen at his favourable set-up, a dry 1200m.
Giga Kick at $1.80 is a good lay.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
Giga Kick is the class runner of the field and if we get onto a good track looks hard to beat.
However, at the poison $1.75 odds I couldn't possibly tip him into anyone given his speed map concerns.
I am going to have an each-way speck on an outsider in the field with A Case Of You ($40/7)
He enters this contest 3rd up where he is unbeaten and brings some decent International formlines into this race.
His first two runs in Australia have been full of merit and his last start 6th at Eagle Farm was a lot better than it shows on the form guide.
He was slow to begin and had to settle right at the rear of the field.
This forced him the widest on the turn and the margin was too big to bridge.
He finished only 1.8L off the winner and was strong through the line.
For this assignment, if he can jump better he can settle midfield with cover behind a hot tempo and granted Doomben plays fair, he can be steaming home late.
Morphettville - SA Derby (2500m)
Mick Gannon Tip
I'd sooner bet in a Walcha BM58 than bet in this race.
But with my arm being twisted, I've taken a deep dive into the form and am happy to lean the way of Promises Kept ($7).
The gelding by Cluster gains the services of Mark Zahra and has relished stepping out beyond 2200m.
He draws well in barrier 9, rolls forward and gives a sight.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
The Cumani stable is in fantastic form at the moment and it is really paying dividends to follow their staying horses.
In a wide-open Derby field, I am happy to go with Bengal Boy ($34/6) who was impressive winning at Sandown last start.
His breeding gives every indication he will eat up the 2500m and Declan Bates takes the ride.
From barrier 7 he can get a great run in transit and can be in the finish when it counts.
Flemington - Andrew Ramsden (2800m)
Mick Gannon Tip
It'll pay to forgive White Marlin ($2.25) for his second-up flop.
He's a high-quality galloper who can bounce back.
The Flemington 2800m is right up his alley and I expect we'll see the best version of this horse on Saturday.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
White Marlin ($2.25) looks set to punch his ticket into the Melbourne Cup with a win here.
Ignore the last-start failure where he ran into a strong headwind at Pakenham.
It caused him to over race and unsettled him throughout the run.
Now out to 2800m at Flemington, we should see him back to his best.
Will find the front, control the race and be very hard to run past.
Scone - Dark Jewel Classic (1400m)
Mick Gannon Tip
Very competitive race where I've narrowed it down to three main hopes, Healing Oasis, Short Shorts and Finepoint.
The Neasham trained Healing Oasis was impressive on a rain-affected track last start, how she handles the drier deck is the query.
Short Shorts impressed last start and makes her own luck up on speed.
Finepoint returns to a dry deck and maps a treat.
Luke Hovhanesian Tip
More Prophets ($16) is the value bet of the weekend.
She has had 0 luck with barriers this preparation, and the one start she drew well she ran only 1 length off Hope In Your Heart.
That mentioned horse would be fighting for favouritism in this field.
She gets back onto a good track, draws well, carries next to no weight and maps perfectly.
Towards the end of the day I expect the track to be favouring run on types and she will be storming home.
Each way all day.
