With showers expected and the unique nature of the Oakbank circuit in play, Pope is leaning away from the obvious and siding with a pair of runners that offer strong each-way value.

He’s particularly wary of short-priced favourites on a tricky track, instead honing in on horses with key track experience and solid maps.

Race 3 #1 – Alpine Flyer $3.40

This galloper knows and loves Oakbank.

He boasts two runs at the circuit for a win and a second, including victory in this very race last year.

While favourite Tahnee Treasure is a serious talent, she’s untested on this uniquely challenging track and I'm happy to take her on.

Alpine Flyer is well drawn, has a sharp fresh record (6:3-1-0) and looks primed to peak first-up again.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him start closer to favourite come jump time.

Race 4 #1 – Bouncing Beyond $4.80

This Andrew Gluyas-trained 3YO has come back in fantastic order.

He has won two of three starts this prep and ran a brave fourth last time behind Ad Astra, producing the race’s fastest closing sectionals.

He also finished alongside Snoopy Now, who then came out and won a Listed race in style.

Now steps up to 1400m, maps beautifully behind the speed and regains Jason Holder.

Only query is the first look at Oakbank, but if he handles the circuit he’s a huge chance.
