Announced as Australia's best Milers
The Doncaster Mile is one of the most competitive races on the calendar and this year is no different.
With a full field of 20 runners and a wide open market, it’s shaping as a tough race to assess but a great betting contest.
The track is improving after midweek rain, with conditions expected to be in the Soft 5 range by race time.
The rail is in the True position, which should give most runners their chance depending on tempo and where they settle in the run.
With a mix of proven Group 1 performers, in-form gallopers, and up-and-coming three-year-olds, expect an even tempo and a race where positioning and timing will be key.
Let’s take a closer look at the key runners and who looks best placed to win the 2024 Doncaster Mile.

Speed Map
With a full 20-runner field, early jostling for position is inevitable.
Royal Patronage faces the challenge of crossing from a wide draw and may share the lead with Just Folk, who will naturally roll forward.
IownaMerc and Linebacker also look to push up and race within a few lengths of the leaders.
Another Wil, drawn wide, will try to slot in just behind that leading group, alongside Gringotts who maps perfectly from a central draw.
Pericles will do similar from wider out, while Stefi Magnetica and Tom Kitten are expected to slot into midfield or worse.
Backmarkers will be banking on tempo and luck as they launch from the rear.
The Favourite: Gringotts $6.50
Looking to become the latest gelding to claim the Doncaster, Gringotts enters the race third-up, rock-hard fit and full of confidence following his brave win in the G1 George Ryder.
He drops 3.5kg here under handicap conditions and boasts an exceptional mile record (5:4-1-0).
He loves soft ground and maps beautifully to get a one-off run in behind the leaders.
There's a strong sense of timing about this horse and he deserves his spot at the top of the market.
Neil’s Best Bet: Tom Kitten $9.00
The Doncaster looks tailor-made for the Godolphin gelding, who gets in well at the weights (55.5kg) and draws ideally to do no work in the run.
He was enormous beating Mr Brightside in the All-Star Mile and again charged home in the George Ryder behind Gringotts, despite spotting the leaders a start.
If the track continues to improve and he finds clear running from the 500m, Tom Kitten is primed to announce himself as one of the country’s elite milers.
The Dangers
-
Gringotts ($6.50): The horse to beat on paper. Third-up, perfect map, peak fitness.
-
Firestorm ($10.00): Classy mare who rattled home in the Coolmore. Maps to sit closer here, handles soft.
-
Encap ($36.00): Huge price for a talented third-up improver with a low draw. Knockout hope.
