Hong Kong Racing Best Bets
Hong Kong racing returns to Happy Valley after the Derby Day, there are 9 races today over the “C+3” course.
This year’s Hong Kong Derby was won by Romantic Warrior, bringing trainer Danny Shum and jockey Karis Teetan their first Hong Kong Derby victory.
Danny will send 5 horses, and Karis will have 8 mounts today, let’s see if they keep up the winning form.
Punters should be aware of the weather, it is expected to be raining on Wednesday morning, so the ground may become soft with the high humidity.
Happy Valley Race 5 #2 Viva Popcorn
The three-time course and distance winner Viva Popcorn will be ridden by Zac Purton again, who is 2/2 on this horse.
As shown in the two brilliant victories under Zac, he is the most suitable jockey as his understanding of race speed is the best in Hong Kong. He times his runs to perfection and knows when to accelerate.
It was forgivable last time out since gate 10 was not easy, but he was beaten 3.25 lengths under Jerry Chau.
This time he jumps from barrier 5 and will get the perfect set up to win once again.
Happy Valley Race 6 #9 Excellent Peers
This is a progressive 4YO who finished midfield last start.
I was impressed as he was the only horse to chase well in a race that was dominated by frontrunners.
He has already shown his ability over 1000m at the city circuit by running second to Scotch Tycoon in January.
His last start performance proved that 1200m is also suitable.
The major contenders in this field will carry top weights, while Excellent Peers with Zac riding for the first time will carry 124 pounds.
He gets a lot in his favour and can break through for a deserving victory.
Happy Valley Race 5 #5 Nimble Nimbus
Trainer Ricky Yiu is in excellent form and Nimble Nimbus can return to the winner’s circle.
The Sacred Falls gelding is lightly raced and open to more improvement.
He won over this trip at Sha Tin three runs back and remains feasibly handicapped off a rating of 56.
Last start he finished a good 3rd to Hk Dragon over this course and distance on his first visit to Happy Valley.
He goes up 2Ib but Matthew Poon rides him for the first time and negates the rise, so he looks primed to hit the target from the 6 gate.
