Best Bets for Morphettville by Heath Pope

Race 3 #3 Spirit of Camelot $2.40

A promising type, Spirit of Camelot was fair in her resuming run but is expected to improve significantly with that outing under her belt.

Notably she was an impressive second-up winner last prep, then went on to secure a close minor placing in the Listed Nitschke Stakes behind Material Dreams and Miss Aria.

Those formlines stand out in this moderate BM64 affair and she maps ideally for this race.

With all factors considered, she’s a likely big improver and rates strongly at $2.25.

Race 4 #3 Surprise Coming $3.20

This talented four-year-old gelding has faced a couple of unfortunate runs since joining the Mick Huxtable stable.

Last start, he raced four wide without cover throughout and still only narrowly missed catching the all-the-way winner.

In his prior run, he was completely blocked for a run.

He got held up behind placegetters throughout the straight and went to the line untested, a clear indication of his potential.

Last Spring he was similarly unlucky, just missing a win over Griff who then went on to claim the Caulfield Guineas two starts later.

It wouldn’t have been surprising to see Surprise Coming in Melbourne’s richer races, so he looks especially well-placed here.

Drawn ideally to conserve energy with Samuel Payne engaged to ride, he rates at $2.50.
