Best Bets for The Valley on Saturday
Moonee Valley plays host to a Cox Plate day, one of the hallmark days on the entire Australian racing calendar.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with some rain predicted on Friday and Saturday in Melbourne, expect participants to be met with a rain affected racing surface around the Soft 5/6 range.
The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit and at this set-up, expect horses to come off the fence if it rains. Expect on-pace runners to hold the key.
Moonee Valley Race 4 #4 Generation $3.60
I'm keen on Generation here for team Maher/Eustace in the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes, coming off two solid runs this campaign so far.
It's been seven weeks since he finished third here at this track and distance in a fiercely run race that saw him caught three wide without cover on the speed.
He was entitled to tire late, but was only beaten 1L on the line behind Mynumerouno and Athelric. The latter, who lines up again here, had a suck run in transit.
Prior to that when fresh, he was only 1L off Ingratiating and General Beau. Both of those runners have gone on to bigger wins this prep in a strong form reference.
Third-up now, he kept fit during the freshen between runs and maps for a lovely trip here on speed.
He is a high rating horse and hopefully James McDonald utilises his speed to roll forward to dictate the race in front, or sit at least outside the lead.
The booking of James is an enormous positive, he is the in-form rider in Australia at the moment fresh off a win in The Everest.
I have the horse marked at exactly his current quote, and am happy to make him one of my best of the day.
Moonee Valley Race 6 #8 Elephant $3.00
Elephant has been exceptional since making the trip over from NZ, winning two from four including a Sandown Stakes.
Fifth-up into the prep here, holding fitness and ready to re-join the winners stall now down in grade to this Group 2 Crystal Mile.
He carried 55.5kg in the Toorak Handicap last time out, giving weight to the eventual winner but also Embolism, who lines up again here today.
After sitting three wide without cover in running, he was pushed five wide on the turn and just knocked up late in a forgivable effort.
Now they meet back on an even weight scale, and he maps to get a dream run this time around from barrier two.
He contested this track and distance three starts back in the Feehan Stakes, running a very narrow second to Superstorm who has franked the form lines.
He maps for an almost identical run to that day, and may be met with similar track conditions as well if the forecasted rain arrives.
This looks his race for the taking and I expect him to prove too good for these. I have him marked as a $3.10 favourite.
