Dicko's Straight Secret
It’s always a treat to return to Flemington, and this Saturday offers a competitive card in the heart of January.
Conditions look ideal, though with a northerly wind, it might be challenging for those drawn on speed and closer to the inside rail.
As always, how the track plays will be something to monitor as the day unfolds.

Race 5 #6 – Mr Magnus $9.00
This 5YO gelding from the Griffiths camp looks like a great value play in a competitive race.
Here’s why:
The Setup
Jye McNeil is drawn to use the barrier effectively, ideally settling midfield or just worse in the small field but crucially with cover.
With the northerly wind in play, this could set up perfectly for Mr Magnus to produce a strong late finish, sweeping past rivals in the straight.
Last Start Performance
Mr Magnus didn’t have the smoothest run last start.
He was part of a group tracking near the outside rail, but a poor jump and subsequent sideways bounding out of the barrier caused him to lose balance.
To compound matters, he wanted to lay out down the straight, making it tough to build momentum.
Despite all that, his sectionals were outstanding:
- 2nd fastest last 800m and 600m of the meeting
- Fastest last 400m, 200m, and 100m
This gelding is flying and with two runs under his belt, he should be peaking third-up.
A smoother trip this time could see him at his absolute best.
At around $10, Mr Magnus offers excellent value.
While New York Lustre was sharp last start and is the current favourite at $1.95, this is his first test down the Flemington straight, and I’d rather side with the proven runner in Mr Magnus.
