Speedy Selections at the Valley
The Valley plays host to a strong Saturday program of racing, with nine of the best set to be run around the iconic Melbourne track.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with very hot conditions expected, participants will be met with a firm racing surface.
The rail is true the entire circuit and at this set-up, the track is likely to favour on speed horses.
Moonee Valley Tips from TheMelbourneMail
Moonee Valley Race 1 #5 Duchy Of Savoy $2.40
A cracking way to start the program, a 3YO BM70 with seven contenders all with seemingly good talent.
Focusing on the top end of the market, I think the second favourite Duchy Of Savoy represents great value in the race.
She enters this contest second up and was a dominant first up winner at Sandown.
On that occasion she put away a maiden field by 3.5 lengths, which could've been more.
The filly sat up on speed alongside a very quick tempo, with the leader to her inside going 4 lengths quicker than standard for the first 400m.
She booted clear at the top of the straight and was eased down late, never getting out of first gear to score convincingly.
What added to the victory is that she still ran the 3rd fastest last 200m sectional of the entire day, a huge achievement off a quick speed with not much urgings.
Second up here, jockey Jye Mcneil may elect to let the speed go in front and camp right in behind them.
This will allow her to strike late from only 1 or 2 lengths off the leaders.
She is a group level horse, with already good runs in a G3 Quezette and G3 Blue Diamond Prelude on debut a year ago, and can prove too strong here.
I have a lot of respect for the favourite, but I feel not much splits these top two and at the better price, this horse is a bet.
Moonee Valley Race 5 #2 Yulong Command $2.25
Speedsters set to do battle over the flying five furlongs, and it's hard to look past the current favourite in Yulong Command.
He has had a recent win at this track over the 955m.
His other runs have all been strong with three other minor placed efforts including a 3rd in the Listed Doveton Stakes.
He just couldn't hold on last start down the straight at Flemington behind Scorched Earth, but he is suited much better to The Valley.
He has great early speed, so expect him to jump and cross from barrier six to take up a position outside the lead.
From that position expect him to be very hard to run down late with only 59kg after the claim for Matt Cartwright.
He has three wins at The Valley from only four starts, and loves this 1000m distance especially around this tight turning track.
He deserves to be short here and finds a very winnable BM78 race to record his fifth career victory.
