The Magic Millions 2yo Classic always creates interest and this year's edition is no different, with the race heavily promoted and catching the back end of many holiday plans.
As expected, the field is comprised of this season's top-line 2yo's that were purchased out of the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling sale.
The betting market is wide open with a number of fancied runners drawing wide and on the drift, post barrier draw.
This has not deterred me and I am convinced the wide draw can be overcome by one that looks well above average and has been ultra-impressive in his lead-up runs.
The Gold Coast surface is currently rated a Good 4 with the rail out 1.5m from 1000m-400m, True the remainder and fine conditions predicted for Saturday.
There is always a slight leader bias present at the Gold Coast due to the tight turning nature of the circuit. Look for on speed profiles to hold an advantage.
Race favourite Dubious has been well supported in early betting and remains rock solid at $5.00 after opening at $6.00. All other runners remain steady.
Has impressed all the way through his short career and remains unbeaten.
His latest victory in the Wyong Magic Millions, is a proven lead-up race to this event. Both Capitalist (2016) and Unencumbered (2014) have followed a similar path towards Magic Millions glory in recent years, with the former going on to taste a Golden Slipper victory.
The wide draw (gate 18) will be testing, as his pattern appears to be on speed and dictating. They may opt to ride him with cover on this occasion, and there is no reason why this wont work.
Must be respected as a leading hope.
Loved the lead-up runs from this fellow, where he dominated and won his past two. Simply raced away from them in dynamic fashion at his latest outing when starting as odds-on favourite at Moonee Valley.
The Melbourne form he brings looks far superior to my eye and he is another who can overcome a horror draw (gate 21).
Expect them to still push-on and lead here, where his superior quality should be revealed to all.
Must go on top. Yes Yes Yes!
Is the ruling equal favourite post the barrier draw and is another that arrives here with an impressive unbeaten record (2:2-0-0).
Just feel the SP profile is a concern, where he won the Breeders plate at Randwick as a $19 chance when was clearly expected to do nothing. Since then they blew out the cobwebs with an easy win against rubbish at Eagle Farm.
He appears well under the odds at the current quote in betting of $5 and represents a great risk. Avoid at all costs. No No No!
Booked a trip North following the dominant display last week at Randwick when heavily backed late ($3.40 into $3.00), before pouncing on the lead from a stalking position and racing right away.
This does appear an afterthought for a stable desperate to get results for a very prominent owner (China Horse Club), and that factor alone sounds the alarm bells.
Did not beat much on the Kensington track and would appear to be suspect against a few of these. No.
Is building an imposing record and has the form lines to suggest he could be the one.
Two starts back he gave Exhilarates (race favourite) a solid 2.2 lengths beating, then backed that performance up with a dominant victory at Rosehill in good grade.
He has plenty of ticks including "Top Cat" to ride and a stable that know how to prepare a 2yo.
If they can find a position from gate 15 he will look the winner at some stage. Top hope.
The mugs have locked on here following the impressive last start win at this course over 1100m where he brained them in a dominant display.
Since then this colt has been backed into equal favouritism, with the good barrier draw certainly adding to the appeal. When you add the high profile Godolphin hype that many buy into, he could start shorter.
Looks a false favourite to my eye and very happy to bet around. No.
Of The Others
#19 Rome was backed off the map last start before finishing 2 of 10 at Doomben behind a smart one in Sun City. He is obviously held in high regard by the stable and could easily surprise a few here. Currently sits as the first emergency however must be considered a winning hope if he gains entry. Yes
