First run in 2017, the Everest horse race is Australia's newest feature race for sprinters, as well as the richest turf race in the world.

Run at Royal Randwick Racecourse over a distance of 1,200 metres and under Weight-For-Age conditions, the Everest showcases not only the premier sprinting horses within Australia, but also international raiders who fancy their chances of beating the locals to the summit.

The staggering prize purse of $13 million dollars will ensure that every edition will be jam-packed full of quality horses. And with so much prize money on the line, and a smaller capacity field, some would argue that The Everest is a better standard of race compared to the Melbourne Cup.

The Everest

Despite not having Group racing status, the Everest's enormous prize purse ensures that it will become one of Australia's most popular viewing and betting races. Held on the second Saturday in October, the race will typically coincide with Caulfield Guineas day. In the short time it has been around, the Everest race day is already contesting the likes of Victoria Derby Day and Melbourne Cup day for racing fans' attention.

Unlike other races held in Australia, entry into the twelve horse field is determined by "slots". These slots are auctioned off  for $600,000 each, with the prospective buyer having to make a three-year commitment to the race. Each slot therefore represents a total investment of $1.8 million Australian dollars.

These slot owners will either race one of their own horses, or more likely sell or loan their slot to another runner. Another potential option for slot owners would be to enter an agreement whereby the slot owner sponsors a horse and shares in the potential prize money with the horse's regular owners.
