The Tancred Stakes is the highlight on the final day of the Rosehill Gardens Autumn Carnival. With one and a half million dollars in prize money up for grabs, the Tancred tends to attract some of the best stayers in the country, who also use this race as a lead up into the Sydney Cup.
The Tancred Stakes has long been affiliated with BMW, and has been known in the past as the BMW International Stakes, the BWM Stakes, and most recently, just the BMW. However, the race has name has been returned to its official name in recent years.
The race was first contested in 1963, where it was won by Maidenhead. Named after former chairman of the STC Henry Eugene Tancred, the Tancred Stakes has become one of the best races for stayers in Australia.
As the Tancred Stakes is run under WFA conditions, it tends to be the best stayers who claim the win. Unsurprisingly, some of Australia's great horses are on the honour roll. This prestigious list includes Kingston Town, Octagonal and Makybe Diva.
And because this is a race where the best horses tend to win, it is also one of the favourite races for punters, who have a good record in the Tancred. That's because plenty of favourites have been getting the job done, especially of late. In fact, since 2012, the roughest winner started at odds of just $4.40.
The 2,400 metre start at Rosehill sees the gates crash open in one the home straight, and the horses pass the winning post before taking a full lap of the circuit. With four turns to navigate, this is a race where getting caught three-wide can spell the end of a horses chances.
