Yes, Via Sistina deserves favouritism, fourth-up, drawn perfectly and clearly targeted at this race. But $6.50 early about Dubai Honour? That’s got to be overs in a deep weight-for-age contest that brings together world-class talent. It doesn’t stop there. There are two other runners both well into double-figure odds, who can absolutely shake the life out of this prestigious feature. There’s still some rain due to hit in the 24 hours leading in, and with significant traffic over the Randwick surface by this stage of the day, genuine good ground is no sure thing.     Speed Map Insights There will be pressure early, with a long list of runners drawn wide who all like to roll forward: Lindermann will spear across from a middle barrier and take up the running. Fresh off his Group 1 Australian Cup win Light Infantry Man will push forward from out wide, joined by Deny Knowledge and Vauban. Tom Kitten is drawn to settle much closer than usual. Likely no more than three lengths off the pace, with Via Sistina tucked inside him and Buckaroo just behind them from the low draw. Dubai Honour maps to slot in midfield with cover. The Japanese pair Rousham Park and Geoglyph should drop out the back.   The Favourite: Via Sistina She’s the rightful favourite, no doubt. All the signs say she’ll peak fourth-up and she gets her preferred conditions. But at the current quote, she’s under the odds for mine. In this world-class field, I’d want $2.50 or better to consider playing.     Neil’s Best Bet I’m playing this race for value, and there’s plenty of it. Buckaroo ($17.00+) is massive each-way value. He ran on from the back in the George Ryder and will be much better suited second-up over this longer trip. Tom Kitten ($21.00) has a stack of ability, and his Doncaster run was better than it looked. He got buried on the inferior inside ground and never got his chance to build momentum. I’ll be taking both Buckaroo and Tom Kitten each-way, plus combining them with Via Sistina in a boxed Exacta. For the trifecta, throw in Dubai Honour, who just needs a bit of cover early, and Vauban, who drops in trip but gains a race full of pressure that will suit his staying strength.     Neil’s Top 5 Via Sistina – The one to beat, but too short in a deep field. Buckaroo – Overs and ready to pounce second-up. Tom Kitten – Forgive last run. Massive value at current odds. Dubai Honour – Proven WFA performer, primed to strike. This week we focus on two warm favourites on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick, both of whom look vulnerable and have the potential to rout punters taking the short odds. In the ATC Oaks, the hot favourite has endured a brutal campaign of travel and racing. The 2400m trip may test her in more ways than one and she shapes as an excellent risk at a poison price. Meanwhile in the Sydney Cup, a front-running galloper is expected to get a “dream run” out in front, but I expect he could face plenty of pressure and ultimately drift in the market closer to start time. His Early Market Movers drop Friday.   Horse Racing Lays on Saturday Randwick Race 6 #2 Treasure The Moment $1.65 There’s no doubt she’s all class, but stepping up to the gruelling 2400m now has the potential to blunt her brilliance. Over this journey, I believe it brings her back closer to the field reducing her margin of dominance. She was outstanding when winning the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill last start, but a hectic campaign involving travel must be starting to take its toll. This shapes as a race where we could see a “tired” performance, with her turn of foot weakening late. It wouldn’t surprise me to see her peaking at the 200m as some of the genuine staying types surge past her. She’s a high-quality filly but is priced like she’s unbeatable... which she’s not. Avoid.     Randwick Race 7 #8 Alalcance $2.50 Now into his fourth run this prep and having been trained to race on speed in every start, the risk of regression is mounting as he steps up to 3200m. I’m happy to take him on here in what is a deep, quality Sydney Cup field, especially given he’s never run beyond 2400m. That’s a significant unknown. The market has overreacted to the likely lead scenario, assuming he’ll get it all his own way. I’m expecting multiple runners to keep him honest, which may expose his lack of staying credentials. The carnival in South Australia is starting to heat up and this Saturday at Morphettville we’ve got a cracking day of racing lined up. No less than six Black-Type races are set to be run and with perfect weather forecasted, conditions look ideal. What’s particularly interesting is the rail position: +9 metres from the 1200m to the winning post and +6 metres for the remainder. That could give a slight edge to on-speed runners early, but there should still be plenty of opportunities for the swoopers late in the day. Last prep she was enormous first-up in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes, charging late to finish just 2.7L off Southport Tycoon. During the campaign prior, she smashed her rivals fresh and then ran a big second in this very race behind Benedetta. She followed that up with a Group 1 win in the Robert Sangster and then a placing in the Group 1 Goodwood, which confirms she’s an absolute track specialist at Morphettville. Lachlan Neindorf knows her well and with the price currently around, I’m very happy to be on board.   Race 8 #10 Navy Heart $13.00 This Ciaron Maher-trained filly is one I’m confident we haven’t seen the best of yet. She’s been crying out for this step up in trip and I’ve loved the way she’s been finding the line in her recent runs. This race fits the typical Maher/Eustace profile perfectly, and I reckon she’s primed to deliver. Jake Toeroek jumps aboard, she draws ideally in barrier two to get the right run and at double-figure odds, she looks like a great play. If she wins this, we’ll be talking Australasian Oaks straight after.
