There’s plenty of quality on show among the resuming runners, but with little natural speed in the race strategy will be of massive importance. If Schwarz gets a comfortable lead, he’ll be hard to run down. At the early market odds, he represented solid value compared to the two leading fancies, who seemed under the odds. Orr Stakes 2025 Tips and Best Bets Track Conditions We are likely to see a Good 4 possibly even a touch firmer, with the rail in the True position. Expect a slight advantage to on-speed runners early, but as the meeting progresses the track should even out offering a fairer surface for all.   The Speed Map Much depends on where Mr Brightside settles from his awkward barrier. Typically he positions just behind the leading group, but while he is fresh may find himself a few pairs back and off the fence. Up front, the Group 2 Australia Stakes winner Schwarz is expected to push forward from a middle gate and take up the lead. The only three-year-old in the field Private Life maps to settle right behind the speed from the inside draw, along with Queensland longshot Freedom Rally. Southport Tycoon should settle closer from a low draw, likely positioning three pairs back on the inside of Mr Brightside. Steparty should find a nice midfield spot off the fence and track Another Wil. That leaves Pinstriped and Semana settling in the back third, but with a moderate tempo, I expect the runs to come as early as the 700m mark.   The Favourite - Mr Brightside $2.50 I’ve long been a Mr Brightside fan and there’s no doubting his class, but taking $2.50 in this line-up is a brave call. He is ultra-genuine and always hits the line strongly, but I have concerns about a potential flat spot between the 600m and 350m marks, which could leave him vulnerable.     Neil’s Best Bet - Pinstriped $21.00 Each Way With the big names eyeing each other off mid-race, this tactical battle could set up perfectly for a strong closer. And that runner is Pinstriped, who represents tremendous each-way value at $21.00 in early markets. Despite being lightly raced for a six-year-old, five of his seven career wins have come either fresh or second-up. Last preparation, he stormed home to beat Mr Brightside second-up in the G1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) after being stiff not to win the G2 P.B. Lawrence over the same distance when resuming. He loves this trip and is drawn to stay off the fence. Given the expected tempo he may need to make his move earlier than usual, but if he gets the right run, he’ll be flying home late.     The Dangers Mr Brightside – Pure class and toughness will have him right in the finish, but it all comes down to whether the price is worth taking. Another Wil ($4.20) – Maps for the perfect run with cover and will be charging late. Schwarz ($6.50) – A genuine threat up front, despite a modest second-up record. Southport Tycoon ($13.00) – A huge improver, especially with the extra furlong and blinkers back on. This week, we focus on two favourites who are severely over-bet due to the hype factor surrounding them and a market that has worked itself into fever pitch. Midway through the card at Caulfield, Godolphin’s “best two-year-old” has attracted heavy support, largely due to the strong narrative around the horse. Later in the day in the Group 1 feature, Mr Brightside faces a tricky first-up assignment against several rivals with a fitness edge and a far greater motivation to secure a place at stud. His Early Market Movers drop Friday.   Horse Racing Lays on Saturday Caulfield Race 4 #2 Aleppo Pine $2.60 There is massive hype around this Godolphin colt, touted as their “best two-year-old” of the season. Naturally, this has led to him being significantly over-bet. I love opposing horses when the market latches onto a narrative and overdoes it, especially when the horse has only a limited historical record. This is a deep race featuring several high-quality colts on the Blue Diamond path, with some likely progressing towards the Golden Slipper. Aleppo Pine will certainly have his work cut out against strong competition. From gate 2, with a typically passive Jamie Mott in the saddle, there is a real risk he could settle further back than ideal if the jockey opts for a conservative ride. This could leave backers reliant on luck in running. I expect the big model betting teams to take him on late as liquidity builds, targeting the fact that he is likely to need a perfectly timed run from midfield or worse. Avoid.     Caulfield Race 9 #1 Mr Brightside $2.50 I’m happy to take on the champion here, as he looks vulnerable first up despite his strong fresh record. He is facing multiple rivals who have already returned to racing and hold a fitness edge, which is often a crucial factor in this early Group 1 feature. The draw (gate 8) presents a tricky scenario. While he has the tactical speed to go forward if desired, I doubt connections will want to cut at the fitter horses this early in his campaign. Several key colts in this race are playing for enormous stakes, aiming to secure a stud career with a peak performance here. By contrast, Mr Brightside does not have the same stable-driven urgency which could prove telling. I can see him storming home late when it’s all over, while a few of the sharper runners kick off the front and do just enough to hold him at bay. He looked to have every chance but hit a flat spot when the sprint went on, only warming up late. That being said, this is D-Day for the gelding as his form from last prep was outstanding. This includes a desperately unlucky Listed placing over this same track and distance. Crucially Rochelle Milnes jumps back aboard for the first time this campaign, after riding him to a terrific 3:2-0-1 record last prep. Dropping to 53.5kg, he gets in light and looks well-placed to break through.   Race 5 #9 – Peleveccio $2.75 This lightly raced Phillip Stokes filly caught the eye two starts back with an impressive maiden win, but her last-start runner-up effort really signalled she was on the rise. Forced to chase off a slow tempo, she charged home late, producing a slashing finish to grab second. She now meets some promising types, including Rebel Johnny, but the early betting doesn’t reflect the times she’s been running.
