The Railway Stakes is shaping up as a must-watch race this Saturday at Ascot. With a stacked field assembled, runners will compete for the first Group 1 glory of the WA Carnival. As is normal for Perth racing, a red-hot pace is predicted which should give all horses their chance of success. The 1600m trip on a Soft 5 track has attracted runners from all over Australia and we want to help you find the best value in a high-quality lineup. The rail is in the true position, and historically this setup at Ascot provides every horse a chance. Leaders will need to save energy early, while off-pace runners can capitalise if they tire late.   The Map The pace looks hot early, with Belclare (1), Comfort Me (6), Searchin' Roc's (7), and Socks Nation (17) all likely to contest the lead. Off-pace runners like Light Infantry Man (2), Zipaway (12), and Port Lockroy (9) should get ideal runs just behind the speed. Further back, midfield runners such as Super Smink (13) and Bustler (10) will be looking for cover. While backmarkers like Democracy Manifest (4) and Mojo Rhythm (13) will aim to unleash a late charge.   The Favourite # 5 Light Infantry Man – $4.40 This Ciaron Maher-trained galloper is the class act of the field, and with James McDonald aboard, he’ll attract significant attention. He has drawn ideally in barrier 2 and should find himself in a perfect position just behind the leaders. His overseas form stacks up well, and he has finally hit his straps in Australia with a great campaign to date. If the tempo is fast, he has the turn of foot to pounce late. At his current odds, he’s a strong winning chance but offers limited value for punters seeking an edge.     Tips 1st – #12 Zipaway $8.50 This Neville Parnham-trained gelding looks primed to deliver in this Group 1 feature. His most recent start was eye-catching, running on strongly against a moderate tempo. The predicted fast pace will suit his off-pace style, and he has a knack for staying out of trouble in big fields. From barrier 12, Steven Parnham should have him positioned perfectly to strike late.   2nd – #5 Light Infantry Man $4.40 Light Infantry Man is the horse to beat but may face stiff competition if the fast pace takes its toll. The speed map he has recieved and class make him a must-include for exotics, but he’s slightly under the odds for the win.   3rd – #13 Super Smink $10.00 This talented mare looks ready to peak here. She has strong form this prep, including a brave effort in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes. While drawn awkwardly in 18, her ability to handle pressure and finish strongly puts her in contention. Chris Parnham’s experience at Ascot will be a big advantage.   4th – #4 Democracy Manifest $14.00 This Chris Waller-trained galloper is a value play for those looking for something to bomb rivals late. It was another classic weekend of Jimmy Beeson's Saturday Lays with both short favourites getting rolled. This week’s lay selections focus on two runners that appear to be severely overbet based on recent performances, where punters have latched on and compressed their prices. At Kembla Grange, a last-start winner from the Godolphin stable has been well-supported in the market, despite having to travel back from Melbourne to face a deep field of seasoned competitors. Meanwhile at Cranbourne, a mare coming off a luckless run last start has seen her odds heavily backed by punters. That victory was the result of a significant stable tip, as the horse had reportedly been working well at home. However it’s often amateur punters who dive in at rock-bottom odds after an initial betting move, and this appears to be one such occasion. The memory of that recent win is likely fresh in the minds of recreational backers. Pisanello faces a field of seasoned competitors here and from gate 1 he’s likely to find himself buried well back on the inside in a tricky speed map scenario. By the time he gets clear to run on, the leaders could already be off and gone. At the current price which feels artificially compressed due to his recent heroics, he looks poor value. Avoid.   Cranbourne Race 10 #8 Oh Too Good $1.50 Oh Too Good is another runner coming up at poison odds in a tricky race. While she’s dropping in grade, this will be her first run at the Cranbourne circuit which can be a challenging track to navigate for newcomers. Her last start at Flemington was commendable, placing 2nd in a field of 16 despite encountering trouble throughout the run. However, the market tends to overrate such luckless performances and this appears to be the case here. It’s also worth noting that her Flemington run was likely the stable’s primary target, with the mare set to peak for that performance. This follow-up race feels high-risk, as she may now be over the top and heading in the wrong direction. At the current prohibitive odds, she looks a lay. Second-up, she stepped out at Flemington and acquitted herself well despite being outclassed by much stronger opposition than what she meets here. This race suits her perfectly, especially considering her only prior third-up run resulted in a narrow 0.4-length second at this track and distance in Group 3 company. Taylor Johnstone regains the ride and her valuable 3kg claim further enhances Karavas’ chances. She maps well to settle midfield and charge home late, and she rates as outstanding value at $3.00. I can’t see her missing a top-three finish and she looks a strong winning chance.   Race 4 #2 Starts Now $2.45 Starts Now is a lightly raced, well-bred gelding who comes into this race in top form, following an impressive third-up win last start where he dominated his rivals by 2.8 lengths. The win was eye-catching, as he appeared to have plenty left in reserve and continued to widen the margin late. This race is no tougher than his last assignment, and he carries the same 56.5kg. Importantly, he strikes another field where the tempo up front should be genuine, allowing him to settle midfield or just behind the speed and finish strongly. With Jake Toeroek once again taking the reins, Starts Now looks perfectly positioned to secure back-to-back wins. Unless he encounters significant bad luck, he should prove too strong for this field.
