The Doomben 10,000 is the first Group 1 of the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

This was made possible in 2017 when changes saw it move forward a fortnight.

First contested back in 1933 as the Doomben Newmarket Handicap, the race was renamed to the Doomben 10,000 in 1947.

This was to reflect the increase in prize money to 10,000 pounds, which at the time was the biggest purse of any sprint race in Australia.

Taking place on a Saturday in early-mid May at Doomben Racecourse, the event is a brilliant lead up to the Kingsford Smith Cup and Stradbroke Hanidcap at Eagle Farm.

Contested under Weight-for-Age conditions, the sprint race over six furlongs sees some of Australia's top sprinters dash for the cash in what is one of the genuine highlights of the Winter Carnival.

Some greats of the turf have saluted in Doomben 10,000 over the years. Bernborough lumped 65.5kg to victory in 1946, back when the race was still a handicap. Besides Bernborough, Baguette, Manikato, Takeover Target and Apache Cat have all greeted the judge at Doomben.

As the course at Doomben is small and tight-turning, the Doomben 10,000 is a race where barriers can make a big difference.

If jockeys drawn out wide can't find a spot on the back straight, their mounts face a gruelling gallop around the long, tight-turning bend that leads into the home straight.

This is also a race where punters haven't had the greatest of records in recent years.

In fact, between 2015 and 2020 Music Magnate's win at $9.50 in 2016 was the shortest-priced win of the race.

Eduardo defied this trend in 2021 when he led the whole way at the short quote of $1.70.

Nash Rawiller gave Eduardo a peak of a ride to win last years edition.

Eduardo was in fantastic form heading to the race after knocking off Nature Strip in the Galaxy and just missing in the TJ Smith.

He led from start to the finish, holding off a flying Wild Planet late in the piece.

2020

The event was put on hold in 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

2019

The Bostonian cause a major boilover by saluting at $41 odds.

Michael Cahill gave The Bostonian a peach of a ride, getting up on the inside of Dollar For Dollar.

2018

2018 saw the Waterhouse and Bott-trained English prove too strong.

English was given a dream run by Tim Clark, who found a gap on the inside and surged through to victory.

This ride proved the difference, with 3rd-placed Le Romain a good thing beat after a tough run.

Doomben 10,000 Barrier Draw

The most wins in the race have come from barrier 1 & 5.

Barriers 14 & 17 has seen the lowest number of wins, with only one.

Horses drawn well with a barrier between 1–6 usually firm in betting, with the last winner to jump from a double digit gate being Mr Innocent (12 of 15) in 2000.

This has been ever more notable since 2017 when the race distance dropped from 1350m to a genuine 1200m sprint.
